Sony’s PlayStation Project Q was meant to revolutionize PlayStation’s Remote Play, but each new update on the upcoming handheld device is turning it into a hard pass for gamers, especially with the latest developments on its operating system.
Factory images of Project Q have been leaked online by Reddit user u/AyoadeNBN, igniting a fiery debate among gamers. The main point of contention is the Android OS on the handheld device. If it remains unchanged upon its release later this year, we can expect to see a lot of backlash from unhappy Sony fans, considering the early reactions it has already received (some gamers might buy it just to hack it and play Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile).
According to Microsoft’s estimate, Project Q’s retail price will likely be $300 or lower (and, knowing Sony, probably $299). If that holds true, it’s a hefty price for what seems like a badly designed Backbone One controller. The design has already faced criticism for its appearance, with gamers comparing it to two PS5 DualSense halves attached to the sides of a tablet, making it uncomfortable to use and impractical for extended gaming sessions.
Twitter user @Zuby_Tech also shared a video and images of the Project Q, displaying its stripped-down appearance, but no internal hardware was revealed.
Here are some of the best reactions from Reddit and Twitter users:
On top of everything, the alleged battery life of the Project Q is quite disappointing. With a maximum of only 4 hours of playtime, expecting gamers to pay over $200 for it feels like a sales crime, especially when the Logitech G Cloud provides 12 hours of play for just $100 more.
The last handheld PlayStation device was the PlayStation Vita, which turned out to be a commercial flop for Sony. If the bad publicity surrounding Project Q prevails, it might suffer the same fate and be discontinued, just like its predecessor.
