Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games’ action adventure sequel, was initially launched in late October but shortly after it came out, it has had fans longing for another reason to jump from the Empire State Building and swing through its expanded New York City. If you’re one of those itching to get back into Spider-Man’s suit, we’ve got good news: New Game+ is about to arrive, or at least, we’ll learn more about it soon.
In a recent reply to one of the award-winning game’s eager fans, Insomniac Games’ official X account acknowledged the long wait for the game’s first significant post-launch update. The social media handle promised to provide audiences an update soon.
Insomniac Games was notably absent from Sony’s most recent State of Play showcase, which is understandable given the recent circumstances.
The first-party Sony studio found itself on the unfortunate end of a hacking incident late last year that revealed to everyone its plans for the foreseeable future, including a predominantly Marvel filled release schedule for the rest of the decade. To make matters worse, hackers got their hands on personal details of employees.
The less sensitive details that made their way online include a release pipeline that will see a Venom spin-off later this year followed by Wolverine’s stand-alone outing in 2026 with the return of Spider-Man in 2028. Then, it’s off for a temporary Ratchet & Clank reprieve in 2029 followed by a AAA X-Men title in 2030. Finally, Insomniac plans on working on a “New IP” sometime in 2031 and 2035.
It’s safe to say that Insomniac, more so than other studios, more than deserves some slack for what just happened.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 arrived last year exclusively on PlayStation 5 following a relatively short 5-year wait. It picks up on the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which saw Peter Parker find someone else he can trust New York City with in a second Spider-Man. The sequel doubles down on the fun compared to its predecessors, giving players control of two distinct Spider-Man characters as they work together to take out a slew of villains, including Kraven the Hunter and Venom.
While lauded for improving on its predecessor, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 suffers from a lack of post-game content. The release of New Game+ aims to change this. Although this feature is quite controversial, the silent majority prefer it over nothing. It’s an excellent way to play through the campaign, especially since Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has more than 78 suits to choose from.
The New Game+ mode isn’t the only piece of Spider-Man content fans are looking forward to seeing in the sequel. It’s been reported that Insomniac will release a DLC featuring an underrated Spider-Man villain.
