Tony Todd hints at unused Venom lines for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

You don't just ask a voice actor to do ten times more lines than you end up using in the base game unless you're saving it for later.

With Venom 3 premiering some time in 2024, Sony might prefer to stagger the release of the standalone Venom spin-off until after the film has come out.

Tony Todd did a masterful job voicing Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, his voicing credits felt far briefer than expected. As it turns out, this might just be by design.

According to the Candyman actor, only 10% of his recorded dialogue made the final cut for the blockbuster sequel. This has led to speculation that Insomniac Games is saving up the unused lines for future DLC.

The news came during a panel appearance at Fan Expo San Francisco. As noted by @EvanFilarca, Todd unceremoniously pointed out that an overwhelming majority of his vocal contributions failed to materialize in the game. But, without any further context given, questions now swirl regarding the nature of the discarded content involving Harry Osborne’s menacing alter-ego.

As mentioned earlier, fans noted Venom’s absence in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The menacing villain appeared only during the latter half, leaving players feeling shortchanged. It certainly didn’t help that the PS5 exclusive ambitiously juggled numerous fan favourite rogues. Among them is the Sandman, which, at one point, was supposed to get infected by the Venom symbiote.

Still, there’s one reason to celebrate following Todd’s revelation – a future DLC or standalone expansion.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 made sure to set the story up so that we'd see more of the Symbiote in the future.

Insomniac Games has been repeatedly hinting that it’s not done with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 yet. Even though most of the team is hard at work on Marvel’s Wolverine, which is presumed to be coming out on PlayStation 5 in late 2024, we can only assume that this only means that most of the development on the sequel or spin-off is already finished. If not, then there’s always 2025. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released two years after the first game came out, so a late 2025 release date for the Venom spin-off makes sense. This could be Insomniac’s way of introducing Eddie Brock into the storyline as the new host of Venom.

Of course, Insomniac still hasn’t addressed the Daredevil-sized elephant in the room. Unless the studio was just teasing fans, possibly another DLC or spin-off featuring Daredevil might be in the pipeline as well.

With the way that Insomniac Games set-up Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it could theoretically release multiple standalone spin-offs before fan unrest sets in and people start wondering where Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and that’s only if Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t as good as expected.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is expected to be released on PC in 2025 or 2026.

For now though, fans can look forward to The Game Awards on December 7 where Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is one of the nominees for Game of the Year. It’s currently the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time and is well on track to outsell its predecessor. A PC port isn’t guaranteed yet.
