The Insidious franchise is one of the biggest horror franchises this century. The first film, released in 2010, grossed the sum of $100.1 million on a budget of $1.5 million. The other films in the franchise followed suit and have proven incredibly popular with audiences.
Despite the franchise’s success, one of its producers, Jason Blum, has revealed there won’t be another film in the franchise for some time to come. Blum said this during a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, which also featured James Wan, his co-producer.
When the interviewer asked Blum about their plans for the franchise’s future, he responded, “You better see this Insidious, it’s the last one!”
Blum went on to say that the franchise is ending, but only for the foreseeable future. He revealed they don’t have a plan for another installment. He warned that anything can still happen, though, and the franchise might resume in some years if they come up with an idea worth pursuing.
He said, “To give a more serious answer, [The Red Door] is going to be the last we’re going to see of Insidious for a while. It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. So, if someone comes up with some idea in 10 years, who knows? But there’s not a plan – as there has been with every prior Insidious movie – there’s no current plan in place for number six.”
Blum’s comment is interesting, given there is a spinoff of the franchise in the making and the sixth film overall. Since he categorically stated that there is no sixth installment, we have to assume he was referring to films that feature the primary characters.
If this is true, then we believe fans can expect to see other projects set in the same world in the coming years.
The upcoming spinoff is titled Thread, and we know that Jeremy Slater, who received widespread acclaim for his work on the Disney Plus series Moon Knight, is on board to write and direct it.
We also know that Kumal Nanjiani and Mandy Moore will headline the film and that its events are independent of the main series of films.
By the way, Blum’s new film, produced under his company Blumhouse Productions and titled Five Nights at Freddy’s, is having an impact on social media. It is an adaptation of a popular video game of the same name and is slated for release this October.
