Fans eagerly awaiting the arrival of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake, only need to wait a few hours to log into the game and find out if Aerith survives until the end. However, before we can arrive to the answer to that one critical question answered, an arguably bigger query remains: How much storage space will you need to embark on this next chapter in Cloud Strife’s journey?
With the game’s release set for February 29 on PlayStation 5, it’s time to dive deep into the details of preparing your console for this monumental RPG.
Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will require a substantial 145.7 gigabytes of storage space split across two discs. This figure positions Rebirth as one of the larger titles available for the PS5, approximately three times the size of an average 50 GB game and about twice the size of many large RPGs. It’s worth noting that the size may slightly increase with any day-one patches, although these aren’t expected to significantly affect the total storage requirement.

To put Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s size into context, Elden Ring, the most GOTY’d game of all time, clocks in at around 80GB. Last year’s GOTY, Baldur’s Gate 3, is slightly bigger at around 108GB. Finally, for good measure, FF7 Remake only takes up around 80GB of space and that’s with all the post-launch updates and DLCs included.
Thus, if you’re hoping to play FF7 Rebirth as soon as the veil lifts in your area, you’ll want to preload the game (unless you bought the physical version, in which case, you’ll only need a few minutes to download the launch day patch.)
Thankfully, the process of preloading FF7 Rebirth is straightforward. To preload, simply visit the PlayStation Store on your PS5 and select the download option. Alternatively, you can initiate the download from a web browser, and it will start as soon as you turn on your console or when you put it in rest mode. Either way, this will ensure that you can start playing at midnight on February 29 without the wait time traditionally associated with large downloads.
It’s important to highlight that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will initially release exclusively on the PS5, with its exclusivity period set to expire on May 29 but it might not make its way to PC and potentially Xbox Series S/X until at least Final Fantasy 16 arrives on either or both platforms. The good news is that FF16‘s PC port is likely coming later this year with the Xbox port following suit.
