House of the Dragon has officially begun the production of its second season at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom, according to a press release by HBO.
In the release, co-creator and Season 2 showrunner Ryan Condal stated:
House of the Dragon has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.
The development was also announced on the show’s Twitter account accompanied by a picture of the iconic Iron Throne.
It's time to return to King's Landing.

House of the Dragon chronicles the civil war between different factions of House Targaryen, the dragonriding ruling family of Westeros. Set about 200 years before the events of Games of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martins, which is a prequel to the author’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series that provided the story for Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon is one of HBO’s most successful television series of all time. The Game of Thrones prequel series debuted to record numbers with almost 10 million viewers tuning in to watch the first episode and was renewed for a second season less than a week after.
House of the Dragon Season 2 will see many of the first season’s A-list cast reprise their roles, including Bethany Anthonia, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Phoebe Campbell, Ewan Mitchell, Jefferson Hall, Harry Collett, Matthew Needham, Phia Saban, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Fabien Frankel.
While Miguel Sapochnik has exited his role as co-showrunner, he will stay on as an executive producer on the new season alongside his fellow showrunner Ryan Condal and author George R. R. Martin. Apart from the three, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, and Sara Hess will also wear executive producer hats for the season.
By the way, a recent Deadline report revealed that HBO is mulling over a third season of the show even though production on season two is only just underway. Given the first season’s performance and the hype it received from fans, it is hardly a surprise.
While there is currently no specific release date for the show’s second season, the television network’s CEO Casey Bloys estimates it will arrive in the Summer of 2024.
