GTA 6 Release Date Potentially Pushed to 2026, Claims Insider

Delaying GTA 6 will have massive implications on the entire video game industry.

And, just like that, the cycle of video game news continues. After everybody spent weeks talking about Black Myth: Wukong, Concord, Deadlock, the PlayStation 5 Pro, and most recently, Astro Bot, everyone has returned to talking about their favourite subject of speculation, Grand Theft Auto 6.

Shortly after an English musician called out Rockstar Games for low-balling them, an insider is now claiming that Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar find themselves in a bit of a dilemma as they will apparently delay GTA 6 to 2026. Adding fuel to theories, the insider suggests that the PC version of GTA 6 is now planned for release 12 to 18 months after the console launch. If true, this would mean PC gamers might not get their hands on the title until well into 2027 or even 2028.

This latest rumor is sourced from a GTABase staff writer who claims to have insider information from “multiple devs across two studios” indicating that Rockstar Games has internally pushed back the release window for GTA 6 to early-to-mid 2026.

GTA 5 is the second-best-selling video game of all time and it was delayed extensively following its initial announcement.

If true, this alleged delay would represent a significant shift from the previous Fall 2025 target, which Strauss Zelnick doubled down on just a few months ago—a truly impending financial disaster.

Then again, no one else within the video game industry has corroborated the report. Notable figures like Jason Schreier and Tom Henderson, who have accurately reported on Rockstar’s plans in the past, have yet to weigh in on these latest rumors.

It’s worth noting that Rockstar Games has a history of delaying their major releases. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 experienced multiple delays following their initial announcements, each pushed back by approximately a year. This track record lends some credibility to the possibility of a GTA 6 delay, even if the specific claims remain unverified.

Rockstar Games has had to delay two of its biggest releases over the past decade, including Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, we can’t ignore the financial implications of such a massive delay. Take-Two has positioned GTA 6 as a major revenue driver for FY2026. Delaying the game could potentially impact their financial projections and stock performance. Take-Two might prefer to flirt with backlash and controversy by forcing Rockstar to work overtime to meet the proposed timeline for GTA 6 if it all comes down to it.

Considering that it had already mandated employees to go back to working in the office as GTA 6’s development enters its final stretch, a return to its controversial crunch culture habits isn’t off the table.

For what it’s worth, we wouldn’t have to wait too long to find out more about GTA 6. Take-Two’s next quarterly earnings call is in November, which is just a little over two months away.

By then, we’ll probably hear Take-Two clarify speculations about GTA 6’s release date and possibly release a new GTA 6 trailer soon after.

As with any unconfirmed rumor, it’s best to approach with caution. It’s no secret that GTA 6 has undergone extensive changes throughout the course of its development, so things are never final until they are. While Rockstar may face internal delays, it’s equally possible that the Fall 2025 target remains achievable.

As always, Rockstar is keeping quiet amidst all the noise, and for a good reason—it’s better off focusing its efforts on the game’s development.

For now, the best choice is to sit tight, relax, and wait for more official GTA 6 news. The last we heard, Sony and Rockstar have partnered to bundle GTA 6 with the PS5 Pro, so maybe Sony will help clear things up when it announces the incredibly expensive PS5 Pro sometime later this month.
