Ghost of Tsushima Sequel Leads Surprisingly Exciting State of Play Showcase

Sony's defying expectations with its latest game lineup. From dark fantasies to classic JRPGs, the PlayStation family is growing.

At this point, we should probably start letting Sony do its thing and stop doubting the company's plans for the foreseeable future.

And just like that, Sony’s rollercoaster of emotions these past couple of months still isn’t over. After everyone pretty much judged Sony ahead of its September State of Play Showcase, it went ahead and surprised everyone.

The latest livestream from the industry-leading console manufacturer wasn’t full of remasters and remakes, as expected. Instead, Sony stayed true to its initial promise. Although there were still a couple of remasters, the much-maligned releases didn’t make up the bulk of the lineup. Instead, we got a remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn and so much more, including a re-release of the first two Soul Reaver games and DLCs for some of the year’s best games, including Stellar Blade and Astro Bot. But the best part is that Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima sequel has finally been revealed, and it’s coming out soon.

The highly anticipated follow-up to the award-winning 2020 title, which cost Sony a fraction of how much it spent on Concord, is headed to the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro sometime next year and will take place 300 years into the future with a new protagonist.

Here’s everything Sony announced at the September 2024 State of Play Showcase:

Astro Bot DLC

If there’s one thing we learned from the Game of the Year candidate, it’s that more bots are never enough.

Sony’s latest flagship title will add free downloadable content that brings bots from Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2, among others. Five more online speedrun levels are also going to be added to Astro Bot as part of the free update coming this fall.

The Midnight Walk

If you’re up for something more sinister, MoonHood, the makers of Lost in Random, is collaborating with Sony on a PS5-exclusive dark fantasy adventure title that’s also headed to the PlayStation VR2 next spring.

In The Midnight Walk, players will play as the Burnt One, who will befriend Potboy, a lost creature who will light up the equally wonderful and terrifying world for you.

Hell Is Us

The first-ever gameplay footage for Hell is Us has debuted. The dark action-adventure game is set in a war-torn country and will be available on PS5 in 2025.

Metro Awakening

Metro Awakening, a virtual reality spinoff of the Metro series, is hitting the PSVR2 on November 2.

Archeage Chronicles

Archeage‘s evolution continues as the longstanding MMO franchise takes a turn for the action-RPG genre with ArcheAge chronicles, which is set half a century after the original MMO. PS5 owners will be able to enjoy the game in 2025.

Palworld

We’ve got good news: Palworld‘s PS5 port is finally out. The only problem? Its legal tiff with Nintendo means that the PS5 port isn’t going to be available in Japan for the foreseeable future.

Fantasian Neo Dimension

Mistwalker, the brainchild of the creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, is finally out of Apple Arcade, with Fantasian Neo Dimension headed straight to familiar territory with a PS4 and PS5 release on December 5.

If you’re craving for classic JRPG action, Hironobu Sakagcuhi and Nobuo Uematsu’s latest work should scratch the itch that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 couldn’t.

Lunar Remastered Collection

Classic JRPGs, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete are getting remastered for modern consoles with a spring 2025 release.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge DLC

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge‘s free Radical Reptiles DLC will add two free characters, Mona Liso and Mondo Gecko. The update will also add music from Tomoya Tomita, Keiji Yamagishi, and Anamanaguchi, among others.

Sonic X Shadows Generations

Sonic X Shadows Generations‘ upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie pack later on December 12 will feature Shadow, voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

With only weeks to go before Dragon Age: The Veilguard hits digital storeshelves on October 31, BioWare linked up with Sony to showcase the next installment in their long-running RPG franchise. The game’s been making rounds on the market for all the wrong reasons lately, but RPG fans seem to be liking what they’ve seen from the action-RPG title so far.

Alan Wake 2: Lake House

A year after Alan Wake 2 became one of the most critically acclaimed games in the same year that Baldur’s Gate 3 came out, Remedy Entertainment is stealing the spotlight once again. This time, the DLC will connect the sequel directly to another game that’s part of the Remedy Connected Universe, Control, as it stands players to investigate a secret research gone wrong.

Hitman: World of Assassination

Hitman: World of Assassination receives a new lease on life for the nth year in a row with a PSVR 2 release this December.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1+2 Remastered

Play as Raziel and Kain once again as Apsyr Media resurrects a long-dead Crystal Dynamics franchise with a much-deserved remaster this December. It’s a shame that information about this remaster was leaked hours ahead of the showcase, though. This would’ve genuinely been one of the biggest surprises of the year.

Fear the Spotlight

Blumhouse Games’ horror initiative will bring its first project, Fear the Spotlight, this October 22. It’s a low-poly PS1-style horror title that should bring more screams and shrieks this Halloween season.

Towers of Aghasba

One of the few Early Access games to ever hit PlayStation, Towers of Aghasba is an action-adventure builder fantasy game that challenges players to try balancing rebuilding a civilization without destroying the environment.

Dynasty Warriors Origins

The first new mainline entry in the long-running Dynasty Warriors franchise now has a release date: January 17, 2025.

As expected from the historical hack-and-slash series, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is bringing the numbers, literally.

Monster Hunter Wilds

2025 is Take-Two Interactive’s to lose based on its upcoming slate of games with Grand Theft Auto 6 also still set for a late 2025 launch. But if there’s one game that could take the spotlight from GTA 6, it’s Monster Hunter Wilds, which becomes available on PS5 on February 28, 2025.

Pre-orders for Monster Hunter Wilds are starting today, which rewards you with a Guild Knight Set of armor.

Lego Horizon Adventures

Lego Horizon Adventures is the Lego game no one really asked for but everyone will likely play when it becomes available on November 14. Pre-orders are live starting on October 3.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Arguably the most controversial entry of the September State of Play showcase, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is a $10 upgrade for those who already own a copy of the original game. It’s prettier than ever, especially on PS5 and PC. The latter is arguably where the remaster will shine the most, especially as it’s Nixxes Software that’s handling the port now.

Stellar Blade

One of this year’s highlights, Stellar Blade is paving the way for more games to come from Asia, alongside Black Myth: Wukong. Its success has encouraged Shift Up to release a DLC for the game with a PC port and a Nier: Automata collaboration both coming later this year.

The Last of Us: Part I PS Plus

The Last of Us Part I is an excellent addition to PS Plus.

The PS Plus Game Catalog will welcome The Last of Us: Part I on September 26 as part of this year’s Outbreak day celebrations.

Ghost of Yotei

The coup de grace of this year’s September State of Play presentation is none other than Ghost of Yohei, a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. According to Sony, Ghost of Yohei is part of its efforts to expand the franchise across multiple media, which includes a live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima.
