Horror fans have long considered The Purge franchise a staple of the genre. The recent update, straight from Frank Grillo regarding the upcoming sequel has given them ample reason to be excited.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, the 57-year-old actor, who became part of the franchise through 2013’s The Purge: Anarchy, disclosed that James DeMonaco has already written a script for The Purge 6, which will revolve around his character, Leo Barnes. However, this could mark the final installment of the franchise, as the sixth movie is anticipated to be its concluding chapter.
(James DeMonaco’s) got the script, man. The script has been written, he submitted it to Universal. Went to (Jason) Blum, Michael Bay. There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But it’s Leo Barnes centric. It’s about Leo Barnes and it’s really was the Swan Song for the series. I know they’ve said that before, but James only directed one, two, and three. The last movie he directed was “Election Year” and he’s only been involved as a producer going forward from there, but he wants to direct this.
While expressing his doubts about the possibility of the sequel, Grillo also voiced his hopes for the project to receive the green light from Universal before he runs out of time.
I’m like, before I start walking on the cane, it’d be a good idea to do it soon. But Universal and Blum haven’t, uh, they just kind of have it on the back burner. It was hot, it was hot for a minute. It was hot for a minute, and then it wasn’t.
Although 2021’s The Forever Purge was supposed to mark the end of the franchise, horror fans are well aware that nothing in the genre is truly final. Originally titled Saw: The Final Chapter, the seventh installment in James Wan’s acclaimed series was rebranded as Saw 3D for its release as subsequent plans to produce more films in the franchise emerged.
Considering that The Purge series has earned a total of more than $450 million in box office revenue with a combined production budget of $53 million, it’s unlikely that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions would abandon a franchise that has proven to be a significant commercial success.
Speaking of Frank Grillo, the former MCU actor has now switched sides to the DC Universe after being “disappointed” with his role in the multi-billion-dollar franchise.
