Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster sold over 2 million units

Final Fantasy VI remains the best-selling title in the collection, by far, prompting fans to call for a modern remake of the popular SNES-era JRPG entry.

Physical copies of the game are sold out everywhere.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster was released on the Nintendo Switch and PS4 last month and it appears to have paid off big time for Square Enix.

The Japanese video game publisher announced that Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster has sold two million units collectively on PC, consoles, and mobile. While Square Enix didn’t provide a breakdown, it did state the total includes digital downloads, standard physical versions, and the collector’s edition. It is an impressive milestone and shows how much fans adore the series.

The announcement was shared by Square Enix via the official Final Fantasy Twitter account.

The announcement was met with highly negative reactions from fans of the series. A lot of gamers remain frustrated that only the physical release includes all six Pixel Remaster games.

Pre-orders for the collection were offered in limited quantities in North America and went on sale in the middle of a Saturday night. The game quickly sold out as the demand for the collection was very high. However, copies of the game hit the secondary market where it sells for hundreds more than its retail price.

Nintendo Switch players are fortunate that the Japanese version of the collection is available for much more reasonable prices on import sites such as Play-Asia. However, PlayStation gamers who prefer a physical copy of the game are out of luck.

Fans opting for the digital release can pick and choose the titles that they like. The entire Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster includes the first six games of the series and can be purchased individually on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop.

Final Fantasy VI remains the most popular title in the collection. It would be interesting to know which games actually sold well and which are lagging behind.

Nintendo Switch players can still get their hands on physical copies of the game via PlayAsia.

The Pixel Remasters were first released on iOS and Android in 2021 while the PC version launched on Steam in 2022. Last December, Square Enix announced during the 35th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series that the Pixel Remasters are coming to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Both the standard and collector’s edition copies are sold out worldwide. Fans likely snapped up more than one version of the game. Having the games released on multiple platforms makes them more accessible to fans of the classic RPG series.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is still available for digital downloads on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. There has been no announcement of the game being released on the Xbox.
