Fallout 4 is getting a PS5 and Xbox Series X update next year

After updating Skyrim for pretty much every other console that's come out since it hit store shelves, Bethesda has turned its attention towards Fallout 4.

To be honest, I'm more surprised that Bethesda hasn't released a remake of Fallout 3 yet.

It looks like we’re going back to Boston soon.

According to Bethesda, the award-winning post-apocalyptic open-world RPG, Fallout 4, will be getting a new update for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and the PC.

The company confirmed the good news after celebrating the franchise’s 25th anniversary. It’s unclear what enhancements and improvements the “free next-gen update” will include. However, we can assume 4K resolution support with a 120FPS mode, if not both, along with unspecified bug fixes and more content from the Creation Club.

Speaking of expectations, fans are worried that this incoming patch will break several of the existing mods in Fallout 4. It’s worth noting that the same thing happened when Bethesda launched Skyrim Anniversary Edition a few years back. There’s genuine concern that such a patch will be the death of Fallout 4’s dwindling community, especially VR.

In any case, this new update feels like Bethesda’s way of letting Fallout fans know they’ve not been forgotten.

Fallout 4 remains one of the best open-world RPGs of all time.

Bethesda confirmed recently that Fallout 5 is still coming, but not before Elder Scrolls 6 arrives, which is still in pre-production and likely many years away from hitting store shelves.

Bethesda is in the middle of polishing Starfield for its release next year and it will likely continue supporting the space-faring open-world RPG for a year or two afterward. If we’re lucky, Fallout 5 will come out this decade but we’re not betting on it. Also, we can be sure that Fallout 5 will be exclusive to the Xbox Series S/X, much like Elder Scrolls 6 will be. It’s par for the course after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media two years ago.

Fingers crossed, those “early” discussions of Fallout: New Vegas 2 in February have bore fruit. The last we heard, Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian’s CEO and co-founder, had expressed his desire for a new Fallout game.

Having two Fallout games to look forward to should stimy the sting of having to wait for a long time for the next installment.

We’d love to see what Fallout 4 would look like with significant graphics mods and improvements on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

In other Fallout news, leaked photos from the set of Amazon’s Fallout TV series hint at a faithful live-action adaptation. Fingers crossed, the actual show delivers when it comes out whenever.
