How will Pedro Pascal reshape The Last of Us Season 2?

The Last of Us Part 2 surprised gamers three years ago when it did the "unthinkable" and killed Joel Miller

If it's any consolation, The Last of Us' live-action adaptation has been greenlit for multiple seasons, so it can take its sweet time adapting the events of The Last of Us Part II.

Pedro Pascal is one of the hottest Hollywood stars at the moment. His schedule is so packed, in fact, that HBO has little choice but to be patient and press pause on the production of Season 2 of The Last of Us temporarily while waiting for him. Thus, as the internet waits for further updates regarding the next season of the soon-to-be-award-winning live-action adaptation, the question on everyone’s mind is, will Pascal’s star power be enough to convince the showrunners to change the story of the next seasons of The Last of Us?

Season 1 of The Last of Us might have made certain creative liberties from the source material, but it ultimately adhered to the plot of The Last of Us Part 1. It’s only natural for fans to assume that a similar scenario will take place with The Last of Us Part II and Season 2 of The Last of Us on HBO.

With multiple seasons of The Last of Us already confirmed (a fourth one is being teased), the more curious fans are now wondering if Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are thinking of extending Pedro Pascal’s time in the series.

By giving Pedro Pascal a more pronounced role in Season 2 of The Last of Us, viewers will be able to bond with him more, making his demise all that much more impactful.

Mazin, the showrunner for HBO’s The Last of Us, has expressed his openness to diverging from the source material. In an interview with Esquire, Mazin noted that neither he nor Neil Druckmann, the co-creator and executive producer, feel constrained by the original game’s storyline. This statement leaves the door open for potential deviations in Joel’s fate, sparking curiosity and theories among viewers.

The show’s first season closely mirrored the plot of the first game, successfully balancing faithful adaptation with fresh narrative elements. This approach won the hearts of both new audiences and long-time fans. It featured Joel’s complex character development and his deepening bond with Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey. However, Mazin’s recent comments suggest that Season 2 might not be a straightforward adaptation of the game’s sequel.

The possibility of altering major plot points, particularly Joel’s death, raises questions about the direction the show will take. In The Last of Us Part II, Joel’s death is a significant turning point that propels Ellie on vengeful path and self-discovery. It’s a narrative cornerstone that defines the sequel’s themes of revenge, loss, and redemption. Altering this event could fundamentally change the story’s trajectory and character dynamics.

One of the biggest criticisms of Joel Miller's death in The Last of Us Part II was that it happened too early, which the show could address.

Pedro Pascal, portraying Joel, has become a fan favorite, and his performance has been critically acclaimed. The idea of diverging from the game’s storyline to keep Pascal’s Joel alive in the series has been both welcomed and met with some skepticism. Keeping Joel alive could provide new storytelling opportunities and preserve the dynamic between him and Ellie. But, it could also undermine the impact and thematic depth of the original depth. Finally, how does the narrative arcs of Ellie and Abby start with Joel still around?

The challenge for the show’s creators lies in balancing the expectations of fans familiar with the source material and the creative freedom they have to explore new narrative possibilities. Whether or not Joel’s character survives in Season 2 remains to be seen. The show’s success in its first season has set high expectations for its sophomore outing. The decisions made regarding Joel’s character will undoubtedly be a defining aspect of the show’s continuation.

A possible compromise is extending Pedro Pascal’s time in The Last of Us, giving him more screen time in Season 2 than his video game counterpart did in The Last of Us Part II. This way, Season 2 of The Last of Us could end right where The Last of Us Part II’s second act starts – with Joel’s death.

Regardless of how HBO's The Last of Us does it, it needs to stick to the game's story, otherwise, Ellie's narrative arc doesn't work at all.

Either way, whether they choose to stick to the source material or chart a new course, the impact on the series’ narrative and its characters will be significant.

For now, The Last of Us fans can look forward to playing The Last of Us Part II when it finally arrives on PlayStation 5 on January 19, 2024.
