Disney purges content as part of Disney Plus and Hulu merger

Disney+ and Hulu's upcoming merger and content purge spark mixed reviews, with users anticipating a reshaped streaming experience.

Disney's latest move comes after the platform lost more than 4 million subscribers.

Disney’s popular streaming platforms, Disney+ and Hulu, are set to undergo significant changes soon.

According to the company’s latest earnings call, Disney+ and Hulu will combine into a “one-app experience” in late 2023. Disney CEO, Bob Iger, revealed that the move is a “logical progression” and will help Disney “provide greater opportunities for advertisers, while giving bundle subscribers access to more robust and streamlined content.”

Unfortunately, in the same earnings call, Iger confirmed that this strategy involves purging plenty of content from Disney+ and this is where fans are worried.

More and more people are ditching streaming services in recent months.

This upcoming move is a game-changer as it promises to create a single platform with an even broader range of content. As a sequel, certain shows and films will disappear, locked away into the infamous Disney vault forever.

Subscribers are worried about these changes. While some express excitement about the possibility of accessing a wider variety of content in a single place, others are worried about losing their fave shows and movies.

Perhaps this was the natural progression after Disney+ welcomed a new rating system last year that allowed the entry of other mature shows like the Defenders Saga, among others.

Despite the apprehension, many are hopeful that Disney’s move will enhance the overall user experience. A united platform minimizes toggling between apps and makes for a more seamless viewing experience. The consolation could also pave the way for new and exclusive content that made no sense on either platform in the past. But, the content purge is still one of the biggest issues. Disney hasn’t given a reason behind the content purge. Paired with the upcoming raise for Disney+, there’s no wonder that the latest statements from House of Mouse are raising quite a few eyebrows.

As the dust settles, it remains to be seen whether the changes will bring about an enhanced viewing experience for Disney or if they will mark the downfall of the platform.

Until then, subscribers can only wait and watch things unfold.

An emphasis on quality over quantity will hopefully drive more subscribers back to Disney+ going forward.

If it’s any consolation, the new MCU Phase 5 release pipeline emphasizes quality over quantity, which results in less content produced for the platform each year. If this is applied to Disney+ as a whole, customers can look forward to seeing a library of high-quality and entertaining content from the streaming service going forward.
