Almost 10 years after releasing Warframe to the public, Digital Extremes is ready to work on something else.
According to the studio’s most recent announcement, Digital Extremes’ next game is a free-to-play fantasy MMO that will draw its influence from “themes of nature, restoration, and exploration.” The game, Soulframe, is still in “early development” and “will deliver its own independent and uniquely immersive experience led by the creative and imaginative minds behind Warframe.”
Here’s what the long-time Warframe director, Steve Sinclair, had to say about Soulframe in an interview with The Washington Post:
Where ‘Warframe is focused on shooting, this one’s focused on melee. Where ‘Warframe’ is super fast and crazy high-speed, this one’s going to be a lot more slow and heavy. But it still has a lot of similarities to the genre that we have experience in.
Sinclair added that Elden Ring will serve as another inspiration as well as Sinclair described the game as “absolutely fantastic.
With Soulframe taking inspiration from FromSoftware’s best-selling title alongside 1984’s The NeverEnding Story, and 1997’s Princess Mononoke, Digital Extremes wants to hype the upcoming MMO up as the next best thing. The only question now is, will Soulframe deliver? Digital Extremes admitted before that Warframe was a “rogue success.”
With nearly 50 million registered users in 2019, Warframe sets a high bar for Soulframe. We are hoping we’ll see more of Soulframe soon enough to have a better idea about what it will look like.
At the moment, Soulframe doesn’t have a release date yet. However, there are other fantasy MMOs on the market for you to try in the meantime. The best ones are Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online.
