Netflix is making significant investments in video game adaptations. After hits like The Witcher, Castlevania, Cyberpunk, and League of Legends garnered substantial followings, the streaming platform is gearing up for the next big gaming series with Devil May Cry set to join Netflix's lineup in 2024.
As a part of this year's Geeked Week, Netflix released a new behind-the-scenes featurette on Capcom's popular action-adventure franchise. In the teaser, Devil May Cry creator and showrunner Adi Shankar talks about the development of the animated series from its announcement in 2018 to his collaboration with Studio Mir and Netflix on the project.
Speaking directly to fans in the featurette, Shankar says that he and his team goal's is to create "one of the best shows on the Netflix platform, period." The showrunner is best known for his work in Castlevania and its upcoming spin-off, Castlevania: Nocturne. Shankar tapped Studio Mir, which worked on notable projects such as The Legend of Korra, My Adventures With Superman, Young Justice, and Kong: Skull Island. With the pedigree of the showrunner and animation studio, it would be safe to say that Devil May Cry is in the best hands for its animated adaptation.
The upcoming series will center around Dante, a sharp and quick-witted demon hunter known for his adept use of dual pistols and masterful swordsmanship. Dante's mission is to protect Earth from demonic threats and invasions. The video game series was originally conceived as a prototype for Resident Evil 4, but later turned into its own series mid-development and ended up enjoying considerable success since its release in 2001.
