Bungie, the video game developer behind the popular game, Destiny 2, has just increased the pricing for the game’s season passes, which follows Bungie’s acquisition by Sony.
Bungie confirmed that the season pass price for the upcoming Season 21 of Destiny 2 is up by $2 to $12 from the previous price of $10.
Naturally, the game’s community is in uproar due to the price increase, with fans expressing their disappointment on social media. Some suggest that the price increase is due to Bungie’s purchase of Sony, which occurred last year.
Bungie didn’t explain the reason behind the price increase, but it’s believed that it’s related to the development costs of the game. Destiny 2 is a live-service game and maintaining it will be expensive. In addition to this, Bungie may want to increase profits following the acquisition by Sony. But, it has raised questions about the future of Destiny 2. Some are concerned the buyout might have a negative impact on the game’s direction and its quality. However, Bungie has reassured fans that they’ll continue having full control over the development of Destiny 2.
The higher pricing for the Destiny 2 Season Pass will be tough to adjust to for the community. It doesn’t help Bungie raised the price just as Destiny 2 is facing an enormous number of bugs in recent months, especially following the launch of Lightfall.
Destiny 2 servers are down more often than not lately, and when it’s up, it’s no longer uncommon to encounter error codes when you try to log in as Bungie works around the clock to put out the fires that it started in the first place.
It’s unclear if Bungie is working on Destiny 3, but it’s highly likely its priorities are aligned with Sony’s massive live-service release pipeline through 2026.
Speaking of Bungie, the studio’s next project will be using Unreal Engine 5 instead of a proprietary engine.
