Apparently, even Arkane Studios knows this, which is why they've decided to release a new trailer. Bakaba explains that the game is a "murder puzzle where you play an assassin trapped in a time loop". He even uses a wide range of outfits and props to help drive home the point and make everything revolving around Deathloop even easier to explain.

Deathloop is basically a game where you wake up on Black Reef every day and all the characters, as well as NPCs, are part of the loop. This means that everyone comes back to life at the end of the day.

As such, it's up to you, the player to find the most efficient way to kill as many targets as possible before the day is finished.
