DC Studios has recently announced Chapter 1 – Gods and Monsters, for the new DC Universe. One highly anticipated movie was conspicuously absent from the slate, sparking rumors that the project was shelved – and yet, it seems Constantine 2 is still happening.
The Keanu Reeves-led Constantine sequel was not included in the new slate of DC projects starting in 2024. Constantine is loosely based on the Hellblazer comics from DC. The original film premiered in February 2005 and gained a huge cult following. There has been a lot of interest from fans for a sequel.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Constantine 2 has not been canceled despite not being included in the new lineup presented by James Gunn and Peter Safran last week. A spokesperson for Warner Bros. confirmed to EW that Constantine 2 is not scrapped,” EW said.
However, we do not know whether Constantine 2 will be part of the new DC Universe or be added to the “Elseworlds” segment of DC Studios. Elseworlds is the category of movies that are not part of the mainline DC Universe.
Reeves will reportedly reprise his role as John Constantine in the sequel. The actor will be reuniting with director Francis Lawrence for the sequel, who made his directorial debut in the original movie.
Akiva Goldsman will be writing the screenplay for the sequel, who is also returning talent – Goldsman was a producer on the original movie. Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures will be one of the producers of the sequel alongside Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella.
Reeves has been vocal about his interest in returning for the sequel. However, the actor noted that Hollywood had no interest in the project. “That’s not true! ” Reeves said in an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “That happens. I would love to play John Constantine again from the Constantine movie.”
Last September we reported that Warner Bros. was developing Constantine 2. This is before the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran to lead the newly formed DC Studios. Fans were worried that the project was scrapped when it was not part of Chapter One of the new DCU.
Interestingly, Swamp Thing is one of the projects announced as a part of Chapter One. The character of Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 in 1985. Perhaps the exclusion of Constantine in Chapter One means that DC is still laying down the groundwork for John Constantine’s appearance in the DC Universe.
Keanu Reeves will next be appearing in John Wick: Chapter 4 on March 24, 2023.
