Celebrity Touch: Unexpected Names Designing for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Always hip and contemporary, perhaps it's only natural that the upcoming collaborations for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 include modern celebrities.

We're not saying that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a live-service game but it's clear Sony intends to support it well after it comes out.
We're not saying that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a live-service game but it's clear Sony intends to support it well after it comes out.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to make its mark on the PlayStation 5 next week, October 20. While fans await its release, some are already looking forward to what’s next, specifically, the release of new suits post-launch. As if the allure of 65 outfits right at launch wasn’t enough, there are fresh inclusions coming from rather unexpected collaborations.

In a fashionably refreshing move, Insomniac has teamed up with Colm Dillane, the force behind the streetwear fashion brand KidSuper, to introduce post-launch suits for the game. The resonance of this collaboration isn’t just about trendy streetwear; it’s deeply rooted in the narrative of Spider-Man itself. KidSuper is based in Brooklyn, which, for those that are familiar with the Spider-Verse, is the stomping grounds of Miles Morales. Thus, this collaboration feels like a delightful homecoming for our web-slinging hero.

However, the surprises don’t end there. Dillane’s announcement on Twitter revealed that the design process wasn’t just in the hands of its professional designers. Pop star Rina Sawayama, renowned race car driver Lando Norris, and football sensation Vinicius Junior have also jumped aboard the suit-designing venture. While Sawayama’s involvement might be understandable given her modeling pursuits, Norris and Junior’s presence feels like a wildcard entry, much like what would happen if we end up being able to play as Venom in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (please, make it happen).

Hints dropped in the teaser reveal that these celebrity designers bring distinct visions to the table. Sawayama and her penchant for leather, Norris’s inclination toward stealth designs, and Junior’s patriotic nod to the vibrant colors of the Brazilian flag are all going to be prominent in the upcoming suits, making for an intriguing palette, to say the least.

For those who’ve been following the Spider-Man gaming franchise, the availability of diverse suits isn’t new. Both the 2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2020’s Miles Morales edition boasted a broad spectrum of arachnid-themed costumes. They ranged from iconic comic-inspired designs to original creations, allowing players to navigate New York’s skyline in styles of their choosing. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 promises to elevate this tradition. The launch lineup include coveted looks such as Peter’s Sun Wukong-inspired Stone Monkey Suit, Miles’s Power Rangers-esque Tokusatsu Suit, and Tobey Maguire’s Symbiote costume from Spider-Man 3.

For the collectors and fashion-forward players, the upcoming game introduces the Suit Styles feature, which unlocks a handful of alternate color shaders. This ramps up the available sartorial choices, offering over 200 unique looks for the Spider-heroes. Preordering Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will also provide fans access to exclusive outfits, adding more diversity to the already abundant wardrobe.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the most highly anticipated sequels of the current console generation.

Amidst all the excitement surrounding the incoming additions, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finds itself the victim of one of the worst leaks in recent history. The entire plot has already been leaked online, with one particular reviewer uploading their take on it way ahead of when the review embargo lifts. Insomniac is urging fans to be careful if they wish to avoid spoilers.

The inclusion of celebrity designers might seem like an uncharted direction for a game rooted in comics and superhero lore, but it also mirrors the evolution of our web-slinging heroes. Just as Peter Parker and Miles Morales adapt with the city, so does the world of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, weaving in contemporary trends, cultures, and unexpected crossovers.

More than a game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is an experience, blending the charm of New York, the legacy of Spider-Man, and the unpredictability of the modern world. Whether these new suits come as free content or part of an expansion is unclear. But if the hype is any indicator, fans are in for a visually and narratively rich treat.
