RUMOR: Capcom Is Working on Resident Evil 9 and Four Other Entries

At this rate, a "bad" outing will do Resident Evil more harm than good, which is probably why Capcom is taking its time.

Ironically, the last time that Chris Redfield was the lead character was in Resident Evil 5.

As Konami tries its best to take the survival horror spotlight away from Resident Evil with the recent consecutive Silent Hill releases amidst a relative lack of hype surrounding a new entry or remake, Capcom is more than happy to bide its time.

In fact, if we go by what one insider is claiming, Capcom is preparing for an even bigger slate of upcoming Resident Evil games for the foreseeable future.

To be more specific, the insider is saying that Capcom is working on at least five different RE games, including the next mainline entry in the series. Furthermore, they’re adding that one of the games could be released in late 2026 or early 2027.

According to DuskGolem, there’s at least 5 Resident Evil games in development.

Capcom struck gold with Resident Evil over the last decade. Every new video game release is a massive hit with critics and players alike, even as the adaptations have flopped or have had lukewarm receptions. But with Resident Evil 4’s release last year, it appears Capcom is taking a much-deserved break.

The remake of the 2005 title set a new bar for such projects, exceeding fan expectations and receiving accolades. The fact that it was released two years after Resident Evil Village with the world fresh off a global pandemic proves that Capcom has a solid idea of what it wants to work on and release going forward.

So, if it wants to take its time working on the next set of Resident Evil projects, Capcom has more than earned the benefit of the doubt.

The first Resident Evil remains one of the best entries in the series.

Last year, the same source indicated that Capcom won’t release anything related to Resident Evil this year, which appears to be correct. Usually, we’d have heard of the next Resident Evil game by now. But we shouldn’t worry too much about Capcom hitting a creative wall. RE9, or whatever it will be called, is still part of the planned trilogy of games that started in 2017 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Ethan Winters nor Rose Winters might not return, but we’re sure as hell Chris Redfield will. The ending of Resident Evil Village saw the boulder-punching zombie-killing expert and the rest of the Hound Wolf Squad taking to the BSAA’s headquarters in Europe with a bone to pick.

The events of the Shadows of Rose DLC for Resident Evil Village, set decades after the events of the series’ eighth mainline entry, purposely glossed over Chris’ confrontation of the BSAA but the fact that the House Wolf Squad still exists then proves that it went swimmingly (and, by that, we meant that Chris took names and whooped some zombie ass).

All of this is to say that the next Resident Evil game should feature Chris in a leading role, but the rest of the lineup remains a mystery.

Coincidentally, Capcom has four Resident Evil entries that hasn’t had a remake: Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6. Most would likely prefer Capcom to skip RE5 and focus on Code Veronica instead, but remakes of RE0 and RE6 could do well if Capcom can make them more survival horror based, especially the latter. The original Resident Evil, which received an official award-winning HD remaster in 2002 that has since been ported over to many platforms over the years, is a potential candidate as well. If Capcom is brazen enough to remake Resident Evil 4, widely considered the best entry in the series, who’s to say that they can’t pull off an even better remake of the game that started it all?

Chronologically, Resident Evil 6 is the last time that fans got a chance to see Ada Wong.

While it would certainly suck not to have another Resident Evil entry for a while, it’s best that we let Capcom cook, as the kids say these days.
