It’s been all the talk of the town lately – Capcom still has one unannounced mystery title that the company estimates will sell millions. Unfortunately for fans of Resident Evil, it isn’t going to be another remake like this year’s Resident Evil 4, despite this being one of the top guesses.
According to known industry insider Dusk Golem, Capcom’s mystery title planned for next year won’t be Resident Evil. The leaker even called the 4chan rumors about a new Resident Evil remake “bollacks.” He then added that “it’s someone making shit up.”
Dusk Golem also shared that the upcoming big Capcom game will be announced in late 2023 and released next year. The insider reemphasized his previous statement that it would not be a Resident Evil game.
Last month, during the company’s financial results presentation, Capcom revealed that the unannounced title will allow it to reach its sales targets for next year. While the publisher hasn’t revealed the upcoming game, there are only a few titles within Capcom’s library of IPs that can sell millions.
Capcom’s main video game franchises are Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter. Among the three, Monster Hunter is the only series that has not released a title in 2023. The most recent entry in the series was Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak which came out in 2022 but was released on PlayStation and Xbox earlier this year.
The publisher also has the Devil May Cry, Mega Man, and Dead Rising series. The last Devil May Cry entry was released in 2019 and sold modestly well during the year with over 2 million units shipped. Capcom recently released the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection while Dead Rising hasn’t had a new entry since 2016.
Many gamers are expecting Capcom to announce a new Monster Hunter title at The Game Awards. The franchise is celebrating its 20th anniversary in March and the publisher will miss a huge opportunity if it doesn’t release a title by then.
Monster Hunter is the second best-selling franchise for Capcom and Monster Hunter World is the publisher’s single best-selling video game of all time with over 21 million units shipped as of last year, making the series a true mainstream hit in western markets.
There is speculation that Capcom may release a Monster Hunter remaster for the 20th anniversary instead of a new installment. The publisher typically announces a new Monster Hunter game six months before its expected release date.
Fans speculate that Capcom may release a remaster for the 20th anniversary and then announce Monster Hunter 6 for release later this year. However, it is highly doubtful that a remaster would help Capcom reach its sales targets for 2024.
With all the information we currently have, it would be much easier to imagine Capcom announcing Monster Hunter 6 at The Game Awards next week. While the time between announcement and release is shorter, Monster Hunter 6 has been a highly anticipated title and one that will surely be able to ship millions upon release.
We will be keeping an eye out during The Game Awards for major announcements from Capcom.
