Since coming on as the new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced their planned revamp for the studio's content slate and start over from scratch. Many film series have been canceled, with the duo announcing five films and five television series in their stead in January. Others are in a state of limbo, and nobody knows what will become of them in the future. But, for one of the studio's two remaining films this year, Blue Beetle, DC Studios' new heads intend for it to be a part of their time at the helm of the studio's affairs.
Blue Beetle's director Angel Mario Soto confirmed this detail to Total Film during a recent interview.
In his words, "We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future instalments of the DCU."
Soto went on to clarify that even though his film was in the pipeline before Gunn and Safran's appointment, it is not tied to the films of the previous era and, as a result, is not influenced by the events that occurred in them.
Soto didn't stop there. He further revealed they have plans for a trilogy, saying: Our first movie, the way we wanted to do it, was always with the mentality that we wanted to do two more, at least. And taking the traditional three-act structure of a story, we wanted our first movie to practically be the first act of a saga. Blue Beetle is not a very popular DC character, and we are quite surprised at the co-CEOs' plan for a trilogy, especially since they do not know how audiences will react to its big-screen introduction. We have to admit it is a ballsy move, though – one that shows they have high hopes for the character and the forthcoming film.
