2023 is an exciting time for Overwatch 2, as revealed by Blizzard Entertainment in their latest roadmap for the game. The free-to-play co-op shooter will receive a mix of new characters, story missions, as well as reworks, as part of the studio’s ongoing support for the game.
As usual, Blizzard wasn’t descriptive with its latest reveal. Instead, the studio dropped an image that offered a glimpse of the incoming new content to Overwatch 2.
The characters, while yet unnamed, promise to bring a fresh dynamic to the gameplay with their unique abilities and roles.

Based on the available information, Overwatch Season 5 will have a medieval-fantasy setting, highlighted by the limited-time event, Questmatch. Season 5 will also bring back the popular Summer Games, a new 5v5 mini Competitive season, the Creator Workshop, and more content as part of the game’s one-year anniversary celebration. As for Season 6, this is when the new Support Hero will be added to the game alongside what appears to be either a new mode or event, Flashpoint, as well as a firing range. Finally, for Season 7, Blizzard is planning to add an Omnic Tank hero and a rework for Roadhog and Sombra, among other things.
The 2023 roadmap for Overwatch 2 demonstrates Blizzard’s commitment to giving the community what it wants and needs. It’s a promise of continued improvement, innovation, and excitement. More importantly, it assures fans that Blizzard is thinking long-term for Overwatch 2.
Unfortunately, Blizzard will have an uphill climb trying to convince fans to stay for the long haul. After selling everyone big on the PvE hero mode, Blizzard made the decision to cancel it entirely, much to the dismay of players who were looking forward to more lore content in Overwatch 2.
If it’s any consolation, Blizzard will still use certain elements of the scrapped story mode in Overwatch 2, particularly in the form of the aforementioned Story Missions for Season 6, among others.

Overwatch 2 is currently enjoying its fourth season at the moment, which kicked off on April 11 and saw the introduction of Lifeweaver. Season 4 is expected to last until mid-June, following which will be the arrival of Season 5.
After a period of uncertainty in recent years, Blizzard appears to have steadied the ship. The studio is on track to release Diablo 4 on June 6 and it’s confident that it will launch without a hitch.
