Can you guess the best Final Fantasy game on PC?

Unlike, let's say, a decade ago or so, PC fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy as a franchise isn't typically associated with PCs but you'd be surprised at the selection of games on the so-called master race.

The Final Fantasy series has been a cornerstone of the RPG genre for over 35 years, evolving from a last-ditch effort by Square into one of the most beloved and enduring video game franchises.

With a legacy of innovative if controversial gameplay (like, you know, what happened with Final Fantasy 16), captivating narratives, and iconic music, the series has consistently reinvented itself, offering a diverse array of experiences. Every single title in the series brings its unique flair, whether it’s through the battle system, the depth of its characters, or the richness of its storytelling. From the original game on the NES to the latest releases, Final Fantasy has stood as RPG’s standard-bearer, influencing countless other games, even when on platforms as noted for RPGs as PC.

Given Square Enix’s increased support for the PC platform over the past decade and change, there’s a wide selection of Final Fantasy games available on Epic Games Store and Steam. But, if you’d like to know where to start, we’ve got exactly what you need.

Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy 6, regarded as one of the series’ high points, is a masterpiece of storytelling and gameplay.

Set in a steampunk world, it features a diverse cast, including an interesting pair of lead characters in Terra Branford and Locke Cole, who join a rebellion against the “evil” Empire who, among other things, is led by a tyrant village-poisoning clown. The game’s nonlinear second half, extensive character customization, and a shift from magical to technological themes offer a rich turn-based RPG experience.

If those aren’t enough to sell you, then maybe the phrase “supplexing a train” will.

Final Fantasy XIV Online

Final Fantasy 14 Online, after a rocky start, has become a major MMO, rivaling titles like World of Warcraft. Its A Realm Reborn version brought significant improvements, creating a rich, immersive world that’s full of interesting story-driven quests, raids, and PvP battles. The game’s expansions, particularly Endwalker, have continued to deepen its lore and gameplay, making it a top choice for MMO enthusiasts.

The best part is that a huge chunk of Final Fantasy 14 is available for free and it’s also headed to Xbox at some point next year.

As a bonus, the next major Final Fantasy 14 expansion is just right around the corner.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age takes players to Ivalice, a world rich in detail and character. As the first mainline non-MMO Final Fantasy with real-time combat, it stands out in a sea of classic RPGs with its Active Dimension Battle system, deepened by the gambit system and Quickenings. The Zodiac Age version enhances the original game with new license boards and jobs, making it a modern masterpiece.

If you can chance it on sale on Steam, then you’d best get yourself a copy.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake

The iconic spiky-haired-brooding-protagonist-trope-spawning game, Final Fantasy 7, was brilliantly reimagined in 2020 as Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which includes a segment featuring Yuffie in its PS5 and PC versions. The remake blends modern action with the original ATB system, delivering a satisfying combat experience and upholding the legacy of its predecessor.

With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth expected to come to PC following its PS5 release and the third title likely following suit whenever it comes out, you might as well add FF7 Remake to your growing JRPG backlog.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, a remake of the original Crisis Core, focuses on Zack Fair’s story. As an action RPG, it deviates from the series’ traditional style, offering a crucial part of the Final Fantasy 7 narrative with a combat style that appeals to action RPG fans.

If you’d like to know more about who Zack Fair is ahead of his expanded role in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, this is the game for you.

Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster

Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster bundles the first Final Fantasy game for the PS2 and its sequel, showcasing a significant leap in graphics and storytelling.

Known for its compelling relationship dynamics and a more conventional turn-based combat system, the collection is an ideal way to experience these games.

Final Fantasy III

Final Fantasy 3, a classic entry, introduced the Job System, allowing characters to switch roles freely. While lacking in character personality, the strategic freedom it offers in team composition marks it as a landmark game in the series.

Final Fantasy I

The original Final Fantasy set many standards for the JRPG genre. Simple yet engaging, it’s a foundational game in the series, offering various versions to suit different preferences.

Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy 7, released in 1997, brought the series into the 3D era with a brilliant story, beloved characters, and finely tuned combat systems, including the Materia system.

Despite its age, its popularity and impact remain significant, making it a high point of the series.

Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy 9, returning to the series’ high fantasy roots, combines traditional elements with modern gameplay. Set in the world of Gaia, it offers a blend of medieval and fantasy elements, resonating strongly with fans, many of whom prefer it over other entries in the series.

It currently holds the highest review score in the franchise on Metacritic with a remake reportedly in the works.

Had Final Fantasy 15 been released as a complete product, it might have had a shot at making it on our list.

Each of these games exemplifies the innovation and quality that Final Fantasy is known for.

Whether it’s the groundbreaking narrative of Final Fantasy 6, the immersive MMO experience of Final Fantasy 14, or the modern masterpiece of Final Fantasy 12, the series offers something for every RPG fan. The enduring popularity of titles like Final Fantasy 7 and the nostalgic appeal of Final Fantasy 9 further showcase the series’ ability to captivate audiences across generations.

As the series continues to evolve, it remains a stalwart in the genre, constantly pushing the boundaries of storytelling, gameplay, and character development.

Final Fantasy 16 is one excellent DLC away from being one of the best Final Fantasy games ever.
Final Fantasy 16 is one excellent DLC away from being one of the best Final Fantasy games ever.

Final Fantasy 16 will likely be the next game in the series to receive a PC port, but it’s highly unlikely that we’ll bump one of these games to make room for its entry. But, who knows? The second DLC, which arrives next year, promises to shake up the already impressive narrative of the game. If it exceeds expectations, one of the most divisive Final Fantasy games of all time might make it on to our list.
