As The Game Awards 2023 inches closer, Larian Studios shared interesting statistics about how players are spending their time with Baldur’s Gate 3. Can you guess what BG3 fans spent the most time on since the game’s launch?
The third entry in the classic Dungeons & Dragons CRPG Baldur’s Gate 3 produced and developed by Larian Studios is an undeniable success. While the official launch back in August had some hiccups due to hundreds of bugs and glitches. But Baldur’s Gate 3 still drew in millions of players to go adventuring in the Forgotten Realms.
Now that The Golden Joystick Ultimate Game of The Year has been out for several months, was it able to maintain its momentum? The answer is yes, according to the data Larian Studios released, which reveals interesting (and in some cases surprising) statistics about Baldur’s Gate 3 and its community of players.
⚔️ Since our launch in August, over 1.3 million players have completed Baldur's Gate 3.
🧀 A number almost equaled by those of you transformed into a wheel of cheese.
📈 All this, and more in our latest thread of amazing stats! pic.twitter.com/38hSZw1wPk— Larian Studios (@larianstudios) December 5, 2023
The data is an update from the previously reported Baldur’s Gate 3 launch weekend numbers. On that weekend, players clocked in 10 million hours of game time and only 368 finished the main adventure. Now, 1.3 million Baldur’s Gate 3 players have apparently completed the quest. And the total number of played hours? 452,556,984 total playtime (or the equivalent of 51,662 years).
But while these are impressive statistics, the more interesting are the ones that reveal the patterns Baldur’s Gate 3 players displayed during gameplay. Check these out:
- The majority of Baldur’s Gate 3 players (94%) created their own custom character instead of using the default character Tav or any of the Origins characters.
- On that note, these players really wanted to get the best out of rolling the stats and choosing their character’s race and classes. They literally dedicated a total of 8,196 years just using the Character Creator.
- Surprisingly, the most played and least played Origin characters remain the same. Gale is still the most popular, while Lae’zel is the least. Do Baldur’s Gate 3 players have something against Githyanki?
- The most popular race is now the Elf, followed by Human. The previous champ, the Half-Elf, is now the third most popular. The least favorite race is the Halfling, followed by the Gnome and the Dwarf.
- The Paladin retains the top spot as the most popular Character Class, followed by the Sorcerer, and the Fighter. But what has not changed is the least favorite which is the Cleric. Healing and support is such a thankless job.
- Who is the most sought after romantic companion in Baldur’s Gate 3? Shadowheart, with 51.3% of players attempting to woo God’s favorite princess. Karlach and Lae’zel are the second and third most popular. Seems like a pattern of seeking hard-to-please females.
- 84 million Fireball spells have been thrown in Baldur’s Gate 3. Just like the D&D tabletop roleplaying game, the solution to every problem is FIREBALL.
- The Honour Mode introduced in Update Patch #5 has already been completed 464 times. But 34,000 players failed to complete it so far.
The remaining BG 3 stats Larian Studios are generally played for laughs and can be found at the developer’s official X.com (the artist formerly known as Twitter) account and the Baldur’s Gate 3 forums.
What do you think about the statistics Larian shared about Baldur’s Gate 3? With the critical success and fan support for BG3, will it win The Game Awards GOTY, or at least the Players’ Voice title?
