Larian Studios continues reinforcing their commitment to supporting their mega-hit DnD CRPG, and have rolled out Hotfix #21 for Baldur’s Gate 3, addressing a notable post-launch feature glitch that allowed seamless item transfer between companions.
The feature enabled players to efficiently swap items among companions regardless of party status or location, such as when transferring items while the companion was outside the camp. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 players started encountering new issues with this feature. The release of Hotfix #21 aims to rectify this problem on all platforms – well, except for the Xbox consoles.
The update was posted on the official website and shared on Larian Studios’ social media platform such as the Baldur’s Gate 3 X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

The ability to transfer items at will was considered one of the standout post-launch additions to Baldur’s Gate 3, providing players with enhanced flexibility in managing their inventories and party dynamics while adventuring through the Forgotten Realms. Larian Studios responded promptly to the reported malfunction, making the fix a focal point of Hotfix #21.
That isn’t the only improvement in store for BG3 players. A bug fix related to Gale’s ‘bad’ ending is also being fixed. Previously, during the explosive conclusion where the Wizard of Waterdeep sacrifices himself atop the Netherbrain, an unexpected consequence turned the player character into a mote, rendering them unable to engage in the subsequent epilogue scene.
This unexpected outcome, occurring after investing hours into gameplay, added an unintended twist to the narrative (and certainly ticked off more than a few Gale fans). Luckily, this unfortunate and – let’s face it – rather funny circumstance won’t crop up again.
Other notable bug fixes and features are new error checkers for instances when save files fail to load, a fix for a crash during character creation when switching characters, and a resolution for a crash occurring during the transition between speaking to Dame Aylin and Shadowheart’s dream about her childhood.
In addition to addressing crashes and blockers, Hotfix #21 introduces improvements to the user interface (UI) and scripting, enhancing the overall gameplay experience of the award-winning Dungeons & Dragons CRPG.
Notably, the ‘Sell Wares’ and ‘Offer Wares’ buttons now function for all party members during trading sessions, and multi-selection in the Trade UI has been enabled for keyboard and mouse users. The complete list of patch notes can be found at the official Baldur’s Gate 3 website and the Steam Community page.
However, it’s crucial to note that Hotfix #20 and 21 are currently not available on Xbox Series X. The tweet from Larian Studios addressed Xbox players directly, stating:
Xbox players, Hotfixes #20 and #21 are still undergoing testing for your platform. We found a crash bug exclusive to your platform, so we’re taking the time to investigate and solve that issue, so your future adventures go a little smoother. Unfortunately, this means that currently, cross-saves will not be loadable on Xbox if they come from platforms that have already been updated to Hotfixes #20 or #21. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are working to bring these hotfixes to Xbox as soon as possible.
Larian Studios explained in a tweet that these hotfixes are undergoing testing due to the discovery of a crash bug exclusive to the Xbox platform. Consequently, cross-platform BG3 saves from systems with Hotfix #20 and 21 will not be loadable on Xbox until the necessary testing and bug resolution are completed.
Despite these technical adjustments, Larian Studios has not lost sight of community concerns. Last month, the studio appealed to the Baldur’s Gate 3 community to refrain from engaging in “threats and toxicity” surrounding mod support issues.
Larian acknowledged the frustrations of players who use mods, especially the need to uninstall, reinstall, update, and reconfigure mods after each patch release. The studio urged patience, emphasizing that discussions on new features take time.
What do you think of these new fixes for Baldur’s Gate 3? Are you happy with the speed Larian Studios responds to player feedback?
