Baldur’s Gate 3 is officially better than The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Baldur’s Gate 3 feels like a magnum opus, a ballad of yesteryears merging seamlessly with the promise of tomorrow.

It's safe to say that Larian Studios' expectations have been exceeded multiple times over.

Taking gamers on a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired odyssey, Baldur’s Gate 3 feels like the culmination of years of role-playing evolution, an apex moment for a genre that has shaped and influenced gaming’s golden era.

Just a glimpse at its towering success reveals how much of a phenomenon this game has truly become. Merely hours after it launched, nearly a million concurrent players on Steam have embarked on this new quest. These aren’t just any numbers; these figures have placed Baldur’s Gate 3 in the league of the biggest launches of the year, nearly eclipsing the aura of Hogwarts Legacy. The game’s spell doesn’t end here.

As it stands, Baldur’s Gate 3 has not only overshadowed the open-world Harry Potter game,  it’s also teetering on the precipice of becoming the highest-rated game of the year on Metacritic, over The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

It’s very rare to get multiple all-time classics in a single year let alone in successive years but that’s where we are right now.

Larian Studios, the magicians behind this monumental title, have truly outdone themselves. Their magnum opus is the long overdue celebration of the spirit of D&D, blending a constellation of class choices, enigmatic characters, and its narrative arcs. But beyond the mechanics and graphics, what they’ve offered is hundreds of hours of intricately woven stories, decisions, and consequences.

For many, Baldur’s Gate 3 has become closest they can get to the roots of D&D without physically sitting around a table rolling dice.

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t just a lone star; it’s a supernova. The score it has achieved on Metacritic, a staggering 97, reflects its brilliance. Yet, it’s essential to consider this score with a hint of caution. Given that only a handful of critic reviews have shaped this rating, with many more in the pipeline, fluctuations are bound to happen. It could climb even higher, or, like the tide, ebb a little. But numbers are just a part of the story.

More important than its rating and sales, Baldur’s Gate 3 proves that independent studios can keep up with the bigger companies.

The narrative that is more exciting to gamers is the one Baldur’s Gate 3 is crafting in the industry. It has nudged gaming aficionados to revisit the CRPG genre, a niche that has often been overlooked despite its enduring charm. In the age of instant virality, Baldur’s Gate 3’s triumph is a testament to the timeless allure of immersive storytelling.

Just consider this: here’s a game that has been in the making for almost three decades, refined over six years, and then marinated in Early Access for another three. It’s not just a game; it’s history coming alive on our screens.

Yet, even in its magnificence, no odyssey is devoid of hurdles. Some gamers have voiced concerns, particularly about a relatively tame third act where the game’s brilliance starts to flatline. While the game offers a seamless experience in its initial phases, the final stages, for some, are either marred by glitches that disrupt the flow or an overall sense that it could’ve been better. It’s a reminder that even the mightiest of giants have their vulnerabilities.

Even if Baldur’s Gate 3’s rating drops down to the low 90s, the fact that it’s being mentioned in the same breath as Tears of the Kingdom is a big deal.

It’s no wonder Larian Studios is hesitant about confirming that a DLC or expansion to Baldur’s Gate 3 is in the works. As it works hard to release Baldur’s Gate 3 on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series S/X, the ever-perfectionist studio is aware that there’s still a lot more work to be done.

For now, Larian deserves a round of applause. After a couple of pandemic-ridden years, the gaming industry rebounded big with a handful of formidable contenders for the Game of the Year award. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom might be the frontrunner but other games, like Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy 16, and Street Fighter 6, as well as sleeper hits like Exoprimal, are worthy of consideration for being the best of their respective genres at the moment. This isn’t include the yet-to-be-released exclusives such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Starfield.

Amidst these giants, established and new, Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t just competing; it’s reigning. Its dominance on the sales charts, coupled with the waves it’s creating in critical circles, makes it a force to be reckoned with.

All that’s left for Baldur’s Gate 3 now is to release on all platforms and give Larian Studios some much-needed if temporary rest.

Whether it maintains its pinnacle position or gets nudged by upcoming releases remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: it has carved its legacy, and it’s here to stay.
