You might want to avoid buying second-hand Steam Decks

Those sold by Valve are generally safe but if the Steam Deck is pre-owned by another person, you might want to hit pause first.

Second-hand Steam Decks can be a great value but there's just too much risk involved.

The allure of purchasing a second-hand Steam Deck might be tempting. The cost savings is substantial, especially as its creator, Valve, isn’t expected to sell the Steam Deck at a massive discount anytime soon.

Despite the growing competition, Valve’s support for its popular gaming device ever since it came out in 2022 has made it one of the fastest-selling items on the market. Unfortunately, this can also mean that stocks can be hard to come by sometimes.

But, again, while it’s quite tempting, recent experiences shared by users online suggest that buying a used Steam Deck, particularly from online marketplaces like eBay, can be risky.

Don’t buy used decks on eBay

A concerning issue has come to light where users purchasing Steam Decks second-hand are finding themselves unable to access warranty services. In a post shared on the r/SteamDeck subreddit, u/un_commoncents_ highlighted one of the more overlooked issues after purchasing a pre-owned Steam Deck. Valve’s customer support informed them that the handheld device they bought was identified as stolen. Therefore, they were ineligible for further support. The original seller, purchased from over a year ago, was reportedly uncooperative regarding a refund, leaving the buyer with no recourse but to report the incident to eBay.

This situation isn’t an isolated incident. Another user experienced a similar problem with a refurbished unit bought from GameStop. These occurrences underscore the risks associated with purchasing used electronics, especially devices like the Steam Deck that are in high demand. The problem is exacerbated by the absence of a public portal where potential buyers can verify the legal status or serial numbers of these devices before purchasing. Such a system could reduce the chances of unwittingly buying stolen goods if implemented. But, alas, it doesn’t exist.

Valve’s current policy only offers a one-year warranty for the Steam Deck, extended to two years in the EU/UK and three years in Spain. Unfortunately, this limited warranty period means that even if the portable gaming device is purchased directly from Valve, buyers will still it difficult to get support after the warranty expires. For those considering a second-hand Steam Deck, it’s very important to request proof of purchase and verify the legality and ownership of the device to avoid these complications.

Steam Deck's unwavering price suggest that Valve isn't in any hurry to replace it with a more powerful version anytime soon.

Some users have suggested practical solutions, such as implementing a pop-up message on the Steam Deck indicating its stolen status, or providing a verification service for serial numbers. This would allow buyers to confirm the authenticity of a device before completing a purchase.

In light of these risks, it’s advisable for potential buyers to exercise caution when shopping around for a second-hand Steam Deck. Keeping receipts and boxes, transferring warranties properly, and ensuring that the device is not reported as stolen are essential steps to protect oneself from similar predicaments.

Until Valve implements more robust measures to protect buyers and sellers in the secondary market, the risks that are associated with purchasing a used Steam Deck remain significant outside of Valve’s own line of refurbished products.

If you do have to buy a second-hand Steam Deck, make sure that you get it from Valve.

Speaking of the Steam Deck, do make sure that you avoid smelling the fumes if you own. Valve has issued multiple warnings against this potentially harmful behavior.
