By now, most fans know Deathloop is technically a spin-off of the Dishonored franchise. But, as it turns out, the connection between Deathloop and Dishonored runs deeper than taking place in the same universe.
According to Arkane Studios’ co-founder, Raphaël Colantonio, Deathloop only became a thing because the studio didn’t want to work on Dishonored 3.
Speaking to RockPaperShotgun, Colantonio talked about how Deathloop came to life. In his words, Bethesda Softworks, the studio’s parent company, wanted Arkane to do something. So, the studio decided to “make something simple and short” and go on from there.
Eventually, as Arkane worked on Deathloop, it took elements from Mooncrash, a DLC for Prey, and it no longer ended up being a stopgap.
By the end of development, Colantonio claims that Deathloop would’ve cost as much as Dishonored 3 to make.
Deathloop was one of the best games that came out during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a GOTY frontrunner along with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and the eventual winner, It Takes Two, in 2021. Deathloop, which was initially exclusive to the PS5, made its way to the Xbox Series S/X last year and received post-launch content. It isn’t clear yet if Deathloop is getting more DLC but it’s something that’s been hinted at in recent months.
At the moment, Arkane is busy working on Redfall, which may or may not be delayed out of its current release date due to a controversial feature missing at launch.
All eyes are on the vampiric shooter if Arkane can work its usual magic or if it will be a rare stumble for a studio known for award-winning titles. Redfall will be available to play on the PC as well as the Xbox Series S/X on May 2. A PS5 version was supposedly in the works before Microsoft canned it following the ZeniMax Media acquisition.
