Amazon Studios to reboot RoboCop and Legally Blonde, among others

The Thomas Crown Affair and Pink Panther will reportedly get movie adaptations although the Pink Panther project might be animated instead of live-action. The remaining three projects – Fame, Barbershop, and The Magnificent Seven – will be adapted for television.

Since the acquisition, Amazon Studios has been working to identify the MGM IPs it can develop from amidst MGM's 4,000-film-titles strong catalog. However, the process has been slow partly because the rights of some of the IPs have proven to be quite challenging to untangle and because Amazon is doing its best to ensure it does what is best for the titles involved.

For instance, RoboCop is a sci-fi action franchise that dates back to 1987. The original film tells the story of a police officer who, after he is fatally shot in the line of duty, is transformed into a cyborg who takes on his city's criminal elements. There are four films in the franchise: the first film, two sequels released in 1990 and 1993, and a remake of the original film from 2014.

Stargate is a military sci-fi film franchise that debuted in 1994 with the other two films in the franchise, Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, arriving in 2008. Perhaps the franchise's biggest legacy is the television series Stargate SG-1 which ran for 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007 thus making it one of the longest-running television series ever. The franchise includes two other television series Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, an animated series Stargate Infinity, and a web series Stargate Origins.

The Legally Blonde franchise is the most recent of the three projects getting television and movie adaptations. It is based on the 2001 romantic comedy novel of the same name. The first film premiered in 2001 with a sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde arriving two years later. In 2018, the franchise's lead star, Reese Witherspoon, revealed that a threequel may be in the works but we haven't heard much about it since.

Finally, the original Fame, The Magnificent Seven, and The Barbershop films came out in 1980, 1960, and 2002, respectively. Both have since gotten remakes and TV adaptations, among others.

Among many other things, Amazon is currently working on an interconnected Tomb Raider universe and a live-action adaptation of God of War.
