God of War: Ragnarok lost to Elden Ring at The Game Awards. Both were locked in a battle for the coveted award that ultimately saw FromSoftware’s open-world RPG take home the prize. If it's any consolation, the God of War sequel won the most awards at the event at six. And, also, Amazon Prime Video finally confirmed that it's picked up God of War for a live-action adaptation, confirming an earlier leak.

The TV series will be based on the 2018 video game, which is essentially a soft reboot of the God of War series. The TV show will be headed by Rafe Judkins, who will serve as the series showrunner. Judkins previously worked on the “Wheel of Time” TV show for Amazon Prime.
In the upcoming TV show, we will see Kratos retire to the Norse realm of Midgard after battling with the Greek Gods. After the death of his wife, Kratos sets off on a quest with his son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak. The journey tests the relationship between father and son as they battle the Norse Gods.
God of War will be written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Fergus and Ostby co-wrote the Children of Men which was nominated for an Academy Award. The pair also co-wrote the screenplay for the first Ironman movie.
Santa Monica Studios’ Creative Director Cory Barlog will serve as an executive producer of the show alongside Director of Product Development Yumi Yang. Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee will also be executive producers of the TV series. The show will be co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Studios.
"God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling," Amazon Studios’ Head of Global Television Vernon Sanders said in a statement. "We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio."
"We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series," Sony Pictures Television Studios President Katherine Pope said. "Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos."
"God of War is one of PlayStation’s most awarded video games, so we’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios to bring our beloved franchise to fans and new audiences in a bold and authentic way," PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash added.
God of War is the latest video game franchise to have a live-action TV series. Amazon is also producing the Fallout TV Series while HBO Max will release The Last of Us this January. 343 Industries' Halo also has an ongoing adaptation over at Paramount Pictures with a second season coming soon. Finally, Peacock has finished filming the first season of Twisted Metal. This is just the tip of the iceberg as there are several other live-action movies in the works based on other best-selling video games.
