The anticipation for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has reached a fever pitch. As its December release date on Netflix gets closer, Netflix is revealing plans for a limited theatrical run in the week leading up to its streaming debut. What makes this announcement even more thrilling for cinema enthusiasts is that the film will exclusively screen in the premium 70 mm format, a choice widely regarded as the epitome of cinematic splendor.
According to Variety, Rebel Moon’s limited theatrical engagement is scheduled from December 15 to December 21. It’s gracing the screens of four prestigious theaters spread across three different countries. Two of these coveted locations are in the United States: the iconic Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles and the esteemed Paris Theatre in New York.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, audiences in London, UK, can catch the film at the Prince Charles Cinema, while fans in Toronto, Canada, will have the opportunity to experience Rebel Moon at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. This exclusive theatrical run promises a grand and immersive viewing experience for fans eagerly awaiting the epic space opera’s arrival.

Rebel Moon’s theatrical run announcement comes after Snyder unveiled a new poster for the movie and revealed that a trailer for the first part will air on FOX Sports this Sunday during the NFL matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and NY Giants. Tickets for the film will go on sale from Wednesday, November 15. With the immense anticipation surrounding its release and the exclusive 70 mm screenings, there is no doubt that all four theaters will be fully booked during the film’s theatrical run.
Rebel Moon will center around Sofia Boutella’s Kora, a young woman with a dark past and a group of rebels she will be assembling to fight against an oppressive empire. Her band of revolutionaries will include some of Hollywood’s most talented actors, including Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Anthony Hopkins, and Ray Fisher. Other cast members include Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes, and Fra Fee.
Snyder initially conceived Rebel Moon as a film set in the Star Wars universe. However, Lucasfilm didn’t pick it up, which led Snyder to turn it into a stand-alone project with Netflix coming on board. Given the chatter about the film among fans, Rebel Moon is already a certified hit on the streaming platform before it comes out – it could even set new viewership records.
This development is significant as Netflix envisions it to be the beginning of a vast multimedia universe. Already, we’ve heard talks of a role-playing video game, a prequel comic, a narrative podcast, and an animated series.
Spanning 800 years in its lore, according to Snyder, there is a wealth of material to draw upon for numerous projects that Netflix and Snyder can explore. However, for these plans to materialize, fans must embrace the film. If that occurs, there seems to be no limit to what they can achieve with the IP.
Rebel Moon is rated PG-13, but Snyder has plans to release an explicit cut of the film that will include approximately 60 minutes of additional footage.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will make landfall on Netflix on December 22, 2023, while the sequel, titled Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver will follow suit on April 19, 2024.
