Zack Snyder scores a big win with Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire on Netflix. The sci-fi action-adventure is a certified hit on the platform, becoming the #1 watched Netflix movie in the world.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire, debuted to a limited theatrical release. Touted as Zack Snyder’s unfulfilled project for a Star Wars pitch, critical reviews were generally unkind towards the burgeoning space opera franchise. But it seems auteur filmmaker Zack Snyder is getting the last laugh, as the first installment of Rebel Moon is garnering huge viewership on Netflix.

According to Netflix, the science fantasy film raked in 23.9 million views on its debut on the streaming service on December 21.

Director Zack Snyder, who also wrote the screenplay and produced the two Rebel Moon movies, shared the good news on his social media such as X.com (formerly known as Twitter).

The story of Rebel Moon is set in a galaxy ruled by Motherworld with its Imperium army enforcing their grip. But a small band of heroes fight to make a difference. Is it too close to Star Wars?

In his statement to fans, Snyder extended his gratitude and acknowledged how their support helped in making Rebel Moon come to fruition:

“It’s been a truly unparalleled experience introducing Rebel Moon to global audiences and I’m thrilled that the movie is #1 around the world. We have the most dedicated and loyal fans across the world that any filmmaker could ask for, and seeing them consistently be supportive has been an enormously rewarding experience.”

Even Rotten Tomatoes, the online aggregator where the first chapter of Rebel Moon received a massive and seemingly coordinated review bombing, acknowledged that it is currently the most popular movie.

This is certainly a big turnaround, considering Rotten Tomatoes also highlighted that Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire had a “rotten” critic score of as low as 9% at one point.

With a full week of streaming the new space opera franchise now behind it, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire has become the #1 movie on Netflix in the world. It seems the massive marketing push by Netflix and The Stone Quarry Productions leading to its December 2023 release has paid off.

Some critics have pointed out that there is an excessive amount of slow motion sequences (even for a Zack Snyder film) and that the plot is derivative. But the global Netflix audience do not appear to mind, as viewership made the film #1 in the world.

Prior to Rebel Moon’s limited theatrical debut, the first teaser scenes were shown at the Netflix Tudum even held in São Paulo. The first teaser trailer was then showcased at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The festivities celebrating the arrival of Rebel Moon in theaters culminated with the “wild card” mechanical knight named Jimmy (voiced by Anthony Hopkins) being projected at the giant Sphere in Las Vegas, with an accompanying drone show.

Now that Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is a certified hit for Netflix and Zack Snyder, are you looking forward to Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver? What do you think are the chances of the Snyderverse continuing on Netflix? Would Snyder be interested in possibly reviving the DCEU?
