Zack Snyder fans have been eagerly waiting for a trailer of his upcoming sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon. After being teased through images and featurettes, we finally get to see the world that Snyder has created in the new space opera that he has called his “Star Wars”.
The 300 and Justice League director was on stage at the opening night of Gamescom 2023 to unveil the first teaser for the upcoming Netflix movie. The new trailer video showcases the world of Rebel Moon and introduces Sofia Boutella as the rebel leader Kora.
Snyder revealed the inspirations for the upcoming Netflix film during the event. The director also touched briefly on Boutella and Anthony Hopkins being part of the movie. But why is a movie featured so heavily at Gamescom? It already has a tie-in video game under development.
“I was always a fan of team building movies [like] Dirty Dozen [and] Magnificent Seven,” Snyder shared. “Also, I was a huge fan of this adult-illustrated fantasy magazine called Heavy Metal. Everything in there blew my mind and I loved how intense it was and how crazy it was in the worlds that it introduced me to.
And so I thought this is a chance and my awesome partners at Netflix were like ‘Go do it.’ So I got a chance to make this movie.” He adds, “Anthony Hopkins plays this amazing robot. It’s an insane ensemble. And of course, Sofia Boutella is really the heart of the movie and you’ll see her just kicking ass through the entire film.”
Part of the reason why Snyder was on hand at Gamescom 2023 was because Rebel Moon will also tie into an upcoming video game. According to Snyder, the game will feature single-player and two-player co-op and will be set right after the events of the two movies.
We’re also super excited to reveal that we’re making a video game for Rebel Moon. The game we’re developing with Super Evil Megacorp. It’ll expand the Rebel Moon universe. It takes place right after the events of two movies.”
“I’ve been talking with those guys and really interacting with them. The ideas they have and the way the game’s gonna expand the universe is just unbelievable. And I’m super excited about it. You’ll be able to pick your rebel and then go on missions and it’s like one and two players in co-op and it’s crazy.”
It will be very exciting to see how Snyder and his team take this new IP and turn it into a multimedia franchise. The trailer looks fantastic and we expect that the video game will live up to the quality of the movies. There is huge potential in Rebel Moon and we will hopefully see a lot more of the universe that Snyder envisions.
Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire is coming to Netflix on December 22, 2023. Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver is scheduled for release in April 2024.
