The UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards, is looking to try his hands at wrestling soon.
Here’s what Edwards said about working in the WWE, as per BBC’s Newsbeat:
Get me on the top rope, I’ll give it a go for sure. I actually went to the event last year in Cardiff, Clash at the Castle. I took my son, it’s quite similar and the fans are really similar.
Now that the UFC and WWE have merged under one umbrella, Edwards shouldn’t have any trouble asking the higher ups for permission to do a squash match or two.
The UFC and the WWE have worked closely together many times before and it’s not unusual for wrestlers to try their hands at fighting inside the octagon. Brock Lesnar is one of the most prominent examples of wrestlers who’ve transitioned from the WWE to the UFC successfully. Another good example is Ronda Rousey, who has since found a home in the WWE as a constant draw.
While it’s highly unlikely that Edwards will retire and become a professional wrestler, we don’t think the UFC will mind if one of their top guys wants to do some promo work in the WWE.
If there’s a demand, there’s always a way.
Besides, the WWE and the UFC will want to capitalize on the current popularity of Edwards. The 31-year-old is enjoying the best stretch of his fighting career following back-to-back wins over Kamaru Usman, the latest of which saw him defend his championship title on March 18.
Edwards has no upcoming opponent for now but Dana White says that Colby Covington is the closest fighter to getting a shot at the Welterweight Championship.
As for the WWE, the world’s leading wrestling promotion will commence what’s easily its most hyped WWE Backlash yet. As for this year’s edition of the long-running PPV, it will be held in Puerto Rica for the first time in decades with Bad Bunny as the host. The 2023 WWE Backlash will likely be headlined by Cody Rhodes vs Brock Lesnar.
