Top Gun: Maverick just beat Titanic at the domestic box office

Tom Cruise's widely successful sequel just sank Titanic's ginormous numbers.

For better or for worse, Top Gun: Maverick will encourage studios to revive older classics.

Paramount is having its best year at the domestic box office in nearly a decade and it has Top Gun: Maverick to thank for it.

While Paramount’s theatrical releases over the past year have enjoyed successful runs, Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel zooms past its stablemates with numbers that put all competition save for last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to shame. A few weeks ago, Top Gun: Maverick reached over $1 billion at the global box office.

But, just when you thought that was the end of it, Maverick broke past another record like how the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet speeds past the sound barrier in no time.

According to Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick has amassed $601.9 million in its initial theatrical run at the United States box office. This is higher than how Titanic did at $600.7 million all the way back.

Here is what Paramount Pictures President and CEO Brian Robbins just said about Top Gun: Maverick:

Top Gun: Maverick is a phenomenal motion picture, and we take deep pride in celebrating this tremendous achievement alongside Tom Cruise, our filmmakers and cast, our marketing and distribution teams, and of course, all the new and original Top Gun fans, without whom this wouldn’t have been possible.

Given its success, it's only a matter of time before we see a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick.

With nearly $1.2 billion in earnings worldwide, Maverick is the first billion-dollar outing for Tom Cruise and its numbers continue to grow despite having been in theaters for a month.

The bigger picture here is that Maverick is doing so well despite its competition. Maverick might have avoided clashing with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but even the MCU film’s premiere wouldn’t have mattered judging by how well it is doing. Maverick has shared weekends with some of the year’s biggest hits like Minions: The Rise of Gru and Thor: Love and Ragnarok.

After pulling more than $40 million last weekend, don’t expect to see Top Gun: Maverick fly into streaming platforms anytime soon.
