It seems like it has been forever since we had a Fable game. The remake being developed by Playground Games has reportedly encountered some challenges in its production cycle. However, a new update reveals that we may soon have our hands on the long-awaited remake.
The Fable remake is reportedly in a playable state according to Twisted Voxel. The update comes from the game’s producer, Vijay Gill. According to Gill, he is “preparing and facilitating regular game playthroughs and build reviews with key stakeholders.”
The mention of “regular game playthroughs” suggest that the long-awaited title is now in a playable state. It is not a direct confirmation that Fable is complete, but it is promising since you can’t have playthroughs and build reviews with a game that is not in a playable state. The update also does not indicate how long fans have to wait until we finally see the finished game. However, it is reassuring for gamers to know that there is continued progress being made on the upcoming action RPG.
Fable was announced in 2020 during the Xbox Game Showcase. Playground Games, the development studio behind the Forza Horizon racing series games, was tapped to develop the upcoming remake of the classic Xbox title.
Fable is running on a modified version of the Forza game engine that was developed for open-world racing titles. Microsoft reportedly prefers in-house technologies being used in its games. Previous reports suggest that Playground Games has encountered challenges adapting the game engine to work on an action RPG title.
Microsoft marketed the upcoming game as an open-world action RPG. It will not be an MMORPG set in the Fable world, as suggested by some rumors. The game will, however, retain some sort of online cooperative mode according to leaks.
According to Microsoft, the new Fable will give the series a “fresh start” and Fable 4 will be “true to the franchise” as an RPG.
“To put the Fable franchise – and give it a completely fresh start – in the hands of one of the greatest game developers in the world, and also right there in England with Playground Games, is sort of a dream come true,” Xbox Games General Manager Aaron Greenberg said during the game’s reveal.
He added, “We’re letting them get a fresh start with the franchise and really you can see it’s still got the classic British humor that’s really true to the franchise, it’s obviously going to be a role-playing game, we’ve got the best folks in the industry working on it. Today was just the reveal of the game, and we’re excited to officially say Fable’s coming, and we’ll share more when we’re ready.”
