Rockstar Games recently announced a remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption for the Nintendo Switch, and much more confusingly, also the PS4 – and that’s it. With the new ports, fans have been asking about the possibility of the game coming to PC – when they’re not voicing concerns over the exaggerated price, that is.
Luckily, Take-Two may be open to developing a PC port for Red Dead Redemption. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick recently spoke with IGN about the possibility of a PC version of the popular open-world action adventure game. According to Zelnick, he will leave it to the development team to decide on a PC port.
“It depends on the vision that the creative teams have for a title, and in the absence of having a powerful vision, for something that we would do with a title, we might bring it in its original form, we’ve done that, and in certain instances we might remaster or remake, so it really depends on the title and how the label feels about it, the platform, and what we think the opportunity is for consumers.”
Rockstar will have options if ever it decides to do a PC version of Red Dead Redemption. The studio can either port, remaster, or remake the title for PC. That said, the absence of a PC port in the current release points towards a remaster or remake.
The release of the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions of Red Dead Redemption has divided fans of the game. Many see the release on PS4 as a deliberate cash grab from Rockstar as the console isn’t the current-gen platform for Sony. Fans have also questioned why the studio chose to release it on the PS4 and Switch and not on PC.
The high price point of the PS4 and Switch ports of Red Dead Redemption has also been a controversial topic. Take-Two has defended the decision to charge $50 for the game, saying that it “is the commercially accurate price for it.” Zelnick also noted that the addition of the Undead Nightmare DLC made it a great bundle.
Red Dead Redemption was originally released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. The game has been considered one of the best games ever made and was the start of Rockstar’s second-most profitable franchise. The game is also one of the best-selling games ever, shipping 23 million units as of 2021.
The Undead Nightmare DLC is a stand-alone expansion pack that added zombies to the action-adventure game. The DLC received positive reviews from critics and has been praised as one of the best downloadable content packs ever made. Notice a pattern here?
To date, the only official way to ever play Red Red Redemption on PC was using the PS Plus streaming service, which allowed subscribers to stream a PlayStation version of the title to their PC, even though it wasn’t technically running on the hardware. Unofficial emulations also were cooked up by fans, though both these options historically struggled with performance issues.
Red Dead Redemption is coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17, 2023.
