Suits, the popular legal drama that starred Meghan Markle, might be getting a new lease on life. Following the show’s overwhelming success after its Netflix debut this summer, NBCUniversal has reportedly told its creator, Aaron Korsh, to develop a new offshoot.
This news comes as a surprise, especially since Korsh said there was no such thing in the works just two months ago. Nevertheless, it is a development that many fans will approve of.
According to Deadline, the new series will be set in the same universe as the original show but will otherwise be set apart from it. It pointed at the CSI and NCIS franchises as examples of what NBCUniversal is trying to do with the new series.
In other words, it will be set in a brand new location, tell a brand new story, and follow a brand new cast. There was no information on the plot or potential cast members but Los Angeles is a reportedly likely to be the setting of the new show.
Even though Korsh and NBCUniversal haven’t agreed on the terms of the project, the platform is prepared to provide all the support required to make the show a reality in the shortest possible period.
There is no question that the resounding success Suits has enjoyed this year is the driving force behind the new project.
When Suits arrived on Netflix, not many people, not even its creator, envisioned its overwhelming success, but that’s exactly what happened. The show, which aired its final episode four years ago, broke several streaming records after its debut on the platform. It even deposed Ozark as the series with the most first placed finishes in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 rankings of all time.
Given the show had previously lived on Prime Video and Peacock, it is evident that Netflix’s reach played a major part in its resurgence and success. The platform was also savvy in choosing a summer release when it would have had little to non-existent new releases to compete with.
The new Suits series, if it materializes, will be the second addition to the Suits Universe. It will follow in the footsteps of the riveting but short-lived spinoff, Pearson, which aired in 2019. Pearson trailed the journey of the titular character Jessica Pearson as she delves into politics following her disbarment. The show depicts her maneuvering the gritty world of Chicago politics and pulling strings for Mayor Bobby Novak.
While the original series and Pearson both aired on NBCUniversal’s USA network, the platform for this new series is yet to be determined.
One thing is certain, though – Korsh will be in the driving seat for the series. He will reprise his role as the executive producer, joining forces with the dynamic duo of David Bartis and Doug Liman, who worked with him on the original series.
