Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is continuing its impressive theatrical run, hitting yet another box office win over the weekend. The animated sequel to one of the most widely praised superhero movies of recent years is definitely living up to the hype.
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has earned $600 million globally.
- The film has earned $223 million more than its predecessor.
- It’s the third-best domestic box office total for 2023.
- The film features over 100 named Spider-People.
- The sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is due in early 2024.
The animated film officially breached the $600 million barrier at the box office thanks to its $13.8 million haul from 63 markets globally this weekend. The Into the Spider-Verse sequel now has a revenue total of $603.7 million worldwide against a budget of just $100 million.
The bulk of the ticket sales comes from North America with the region contributing $339 million to the movie’s box office haul. Despite premiering five weeks ago, Across the Spider-verse still managed to beat The Flash at the box office as the DC Studios movie earned $11.4 million.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lives up to its billing as one of the most anticipated movies of 2023. With its box office totals, the film has now earned $223 million more than Into the Spider-Verse did in 2018.
As of this week, Across the Spider-Verse has the third-best domestic box office total for 2023 and is only behind The Super Mario Bros Movie’s $573.4 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’s $355.6 million. The movie is also the fourth-highest North American film, being edged out by Fast X’s $696 for a place on the podium.
What’s more is that there is no indication that Across the Spider-Verse will slow down at the global box office. The film had its biggest international take from China with $48.6 million, followed by the UK’s $32.6 million.
However, the film will see a lot of competition in the coming weeks with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One, Barbie, and Oppenheimer coming to theaters. Disney’s Elemental is also having a strong showing and should give Miles Morales a challenge on the animated front.
One of the main draws of Across the Spider-Verse is the inclusion of over 100 named Spider-People. Many fans were excited to see alternate versions of Miles Morales including Spider-Men from movies, animated series, and even video games.
The film even managed a surprise cameo for Donald Glover as Prowler, reprising his role as the villain from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Many fans expect Prowler to play a major role in the Miles Morales live-action movie which is reportedly underway at Sony.
Fans will not have to wait long as the sequel to Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to premiere in early 2024. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is coming to theaters on March 29, 2024.
