After what was a tumultuous year, Morbius, which garnered mostly negative reviews from critics, has hit a new low with multiple nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards, popularly known as Razzies, scheduled to take place on March 11. The Golden Raspberry Award is a parody award show that celebrates some of the worst movies and movie performances every year.
Morbius, the Jared Leto-led superhero film, is nominated in five categories - namely the Worst Film, the Worst Actor for Leto, the Worst Supporting Actress for Adria Arjona, the Worst Director for Daniel Espinosa, and the Worst Screenplay for Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. For a film that has been heavily maligned by fans and critics alike, the Razzies nomination adds salt to injury for everybody involved in the making of the film.
Apart from its overwhelmingly negative reviews, Morbius also performed horribly at the box office. The film topped the box office in its opening weekend with a $39 million gross. However, it experienced the second-worst drop-off of any superhero film in its second week with a $10.2 million gross.
When Sony decided to re-release the film a few weeks after its debut, it bombed again with a mere $300,000 gross. It would eventually earn a total of $167.5 million at the global box office, which rendered it a box office flop when compared with its $83 million budget.
