Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions as Netflix unveiled the final trailer for its highly anticipated animated series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. During the exciting Geeked Week event, the streaming giant treated fans to a sneak peek of the upcoming series, offering a glimpse into the latest adaptation of one of the most influential ‘nerdy’ works.
The trailer kicks off with Pilgrim crossing paths with Flowers, the girl of his dreams. In a moment of courage, he gathers himself and asks her out on a date—a proposal she happily accepts. After their date, Flowers confesses to a friend, “There were sparks,” revealing the burgeoning romance at the heart of the series.
She goes to the extent of describing her encounter with him as “Great!” when her friend expresses surprise at how one date has left her so captivated. However, things aren’t that smooth all the way through – Scott Pilgrim Takes Off revolves around overcoming a series of obstacles.
As per the synopsis – which shouldn’t be surprising to fans of the source material – the titular character must conquer the seven evil exes of Flowers before he can win her heart. To make matters worse, complications will arise on his seemingly straightforward yet perilous journey to be with the girl of his dreams.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the second adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The initial live-action adaptation, released in 2010, received positive critical reviews. Unfortunately, it performed poorly at the box office, failing to recover its production costs.
Nevertheless, it left a lasting impression and gained a reputation as a cult film. Fortunately, Netflix gave the story new life when it picked it up for adaptation last year. More importantly, the studio convinced the entire cast to return for the animated adaptation.
This includes Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, and Brie Larson as Envy Adams. This makes the new show almost feel like an adaptation of the adaptation, in a way.
Given the movie’s lackluster performance with audiences, Netflix and O’Malley will be hoping the upcoming film flips the script and becomes a success. If it doesn’t, the IP will most likely be abandoned and fans might never see another on-screen depiction.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is among the projects highlighted by Netflix at its Geeked Week event. The streamer also unveiled the first trailer for the upcoming fantasy adventure movie “Damsel,” starring Millie Bobby Brown, as well as the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
Netflix also took the opportunity to announce that the highly-anticipated second season of 2021’s Arcane will premiere in November 2024. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Friday, November 17th.
