Dark Souls is one of the most popular titles from FromSoftware, effectively birthing an entire genre alongside Bloodborne. Now, an insider claims that the action RPG is getting an animated adaptation.
The original Dark Souls series consists of three titles with the original game released in 2011. This was followed up by Dark Souls 2 and 3 in 2014 and 2016, respectively. The gaming community recognizes the trilogy collectively as some of the greatest video games ever made.
The Dark Souls series games are known for being very challenging and having a very steep learning curve. The gameplay leans on dodging oncoming attacks and counter-attacking when an opening presents itself. The “souls-like” genre of games features the gameplay mechanics of the Dark Souls series.
According to a report by GiantFreakinRobot, Netflix is working on an animated adaptation of Dark Souls, saying that the sources of the information are “trusted and proven.”
We’ve exclusively learned that Netflix is working on a Dark Souls anime series based on one of the greatest video games ever made,” Erika Hanson wrote.
The report also shared that the anime will likely be set during the events of the original game – the second Age of Fire in the fantasy world of Lordran which is home to knights, dragons, demons, and other supernatural creatures.
In the original Dark Souls, humans are afflicted by an undead curse, the Darksign. The story follows the protagonist, one of the cursed undead, in their quest to acquire the Lord Souls and fulfill a prophecy.
Netflix has successfully adapted several video game adaptations over the years, the most successful of which is Castlevania. The series was very well received by fans and lasted four seasons on the streaming platform with a spin-off coming in September..
More recently, Cyberpunk: Edgerunner helped rejuvenate interest in Cyberpunk 2077, nearly two years after it first hit the storeshelves. The game was launched in an unfinished state and had numerous game-breaking bugs and glitches. The title also suffered from poor performance on the previous generation platforms.
Finally, Netflix has a live-action adaptation of The Witcher which stars Henry Cavill. The final episodes of Season 3 were just recently released on the streaming platform and mark the end of Cavill’s tenure as Geralt of Rivia.
We have high hopes for the rumored Dark Souls anime given Netflix’s success with previous video game adaptations. We’re hoping it’s as good if not better than Castlevania.
