Rocksteady delays Nintendo Switch port of Batman: Arkham Trilogy to December

Rocksteady Studios probably looked at the backlash NetherRealm Studios got for Mortal Kombat 1 and decided their port needed a bit more work.

It looks like Bruce Wayne needed more prep time before facing off against the hundreds of millions of people who own a Nintendo Switch.

It’s been said that Batman can do anything and stand against anyone if given enough prep time. But, that’s the thing – he needs a heads up. It doesn’t have to be a lot though. Batman has proven that he can take a mile out of every inch his opponents give him.

Rocksteady Studios is taking this into heart as it tries to punch well above its weight by bringing the Batman: Arkham Trilogy to the Nintendo Switch.

Originally confirmed for an October 13 launch, Rocksteady has since hit the trio of Batman: Arkham games with a hefty two-month delay for further polishing.

Batman’s plot armor aside, delaying such a graphically intensive game on a console that’s marginally weaker compared to even the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One makes a lot of sense. Don’t forget, the latest game in the trilogy, Batman: Arkham Knight, wasn’t the most well-optimized when it came out in 2015.

The game is in a much better state these days than before – it’s aged quite well, actually – but it took Rocksteady several months of patches to make that happen.

Besides, Rocksteady Studios probably wants to avoid the same kind of backlash that its sister studio, NetherRealm Studios, received with Mortal Kombat 1. The surprising decision to port a next-gen title to a nearly-decade-old console immediately backfired on Ed Boon and the crew, forcing them to apologize and guarantee fans that fixes are coming.

Batman: Arkham City is widely considered as the best game in the trilogy.

So far, eyes are still popping on the Switch port of Mortal Kombat 1, and we mean that in the not-so-welcome way, so it remains to be seen if NetherRealm can work its magic.

Thankfully, the fans appear to be very understanding of Rocksteady’s decision not to half-ass the release of the Batman: Arkham Trilogy on the Switch.

After spending nearly a decade setting the standard for comic book video game adaptations, Rocksteady Studios hasn’t stepped out of the shadows for many years. The Warner Bros. Games subsidiary hasn’t released a new game since 2016 when it made a VR version of Batman: Arkham Asylum. We can only assume that it didn’t do well as the other games in the Batman: Arkham Trilogy never followed suit.

Batman: Arkham Asylum made the most out of a relatively small setting and raised the bar for comic book video game adaptations.

At the moment, Rocksteady Studios is working on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which was delayed to 2024 due to the backlash from the community.

Comic book fans aren’t missing out despite the delay to Batman: Arkham Trilogy though. Hellboy Web of Wyrd is still on track for an October 18 release on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. Finally, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for October 20. Granted, it’s exclusive to the PlayStation 5, but with Sony’s latest promotion and bundle, now is as good of a time as any to get your hands on the company’s flagship console.
