The original Red Dead Redemption came out in 2010 as a spiritual successor to the mildly successful Red Dead Revolver in 2004. The game was highly praised, both by critics and audiences alike, selling well over 20 million copies since it came out. Eight years later, a sequel came out that was even bigger in every way, including the accolades it received. Now, as Rockstar focuses all of its efforts on GTA 6, even dropping Red Dead Online in pursuit of the presumably billion-dollar sixthquel, rumors have emerged that the developer might simultaneously be working on at least one more project.
- Rockstar Games may be working on a Red Dead Redemption remaster.
- South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee has a new rating for the game.
- The remaster could be a simple port, a full remake, or a PC version.
If we believe the ratings, which history suggests we should, the award-winning Western epic, Red Dead Redemption, might be galloping back into the spotlight.
Once again, South Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) is giving us insider information about what could be a potential remake or remaster of the 2010 title.
The GRAC has a fresh rating for Red Dead Redemption, separate from the original 2010 game and its sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2. But remember, while a new rating hints at a release, it offers no concrete information regarding a potential release date. Although when these happen, the game is usually out within six months if not less.
Red Dead Redemption is lauded as one of the best games from the Xbox 360/PS3 era. A franchise built alongside the iconic Grand Theft Auto series, it has only wowed fans with its high-level depth and has long had a genuine demand for a remake or remaster. Fans have long envisioned an improved version of the first game, building upon the solid foundations of its sequel.
While rumours of a remake or remaster have been swirling for years, they were initially shelved, alongside another remake or remaster of GTA IV, due to the lukewarm reception of the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. But, the winds may have shifted with this new rating and updated descriptions pointing to a more detailed level of violence and gore – features more common in the sequel.
Of course, as we’ve already mentioned, Rockstar’s past remake attempts have been with mixed reviews, chief among them being the GTA Trilogy remaster. This has led to concerns among fans about the quality of a potential Red Dead Redemption remake.
Coincidentally, the listing comes just shortly after rumors emerged about Rockstar’s “other” unannounced VR project, one that may or may not be San Andreas VR for the Meta Quest 2.
The situation is far from clear, though. We don’t know whether the potential new version is a simple port, a remaster, or if a full remake is on the way. It could even signal the long-awaited arrival of the original game on PC, a platform it never came out on. However, if the rumors hold water, we may be on the cusp of a thrilling new chapter for one of Rockstar’s most beloved franchises.
As it stands, the only sure thing is the anticipation building among fans worldwide.
As they say in the Wild West, the proof will be in the pudding, and we may not have to wait too long to taste it.
