Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online have a huge roleplaying community. Now, the developer of the some of the most popular roleplay servers has been purchased by Rockstar Game.
Rockster surprised fans by acquiring Cfx.re, which maintains the largest roleplay and creator communities for both of its best-selling franchises, Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The studio is the host of FiveM and RedM, which are now part of Rockstar Games.
FiveM is the biggest GTA RP server in the world and hosts thousands of players daily. Modders and creators also use the RP servers to showcase their talents in making content for GTA Online.

Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers,” Rockstar said in its official announcement. “As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community.”
It adds, “By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”
“We look forward to sharing more in the weeks and months ahead.”
Rockstars has had a pretty rocky relationship with modders over the past years. Rockstar banned Cfx.re in 2015 and called FiveM “an unauthorized alternate multiplayer service that contains code designed to facilitate piracy.” According to the founder of Cfx.re, Take-Two even sent private investigators to their homes to intimidate them into shutting down the servers.
The new acquisition comes ahead of an expected announcement for Grand Theft Auto 6. Fans are now speculating that Rockstar plans to release GTA 6 with some roleplaying features. However, Cfx.re is keeping quiet about the upcoming title, telling fans, “Please, do not ask us about the next GTA!”
“This is a huge step forward in the growth of our community, and an opportunity for us to work with Rockstar Games to advance the FiveM platform and the creative community surrounding it,” the Cfx.re said in a statement. “While our day-to-day operations won’t have any noticeable changes, with Rockstar’s support, we are going to continue to improve our platform and we are truly excited for what this means for our users, community, and creators!”
“And for those curious about what else Rockstar is working on, please understand that our partnership with Rockstar Games is focused on our FiveM and RedM platforms. So please, do not ask us about the next GTA!”
“Thank you all for your support. We can’t wait to see what the future brings!”
It will be interesting to see what Cfx.re will bring to regular GTA Online players in the future. Having the developer onboard means that some of the popular mods running on roleplay servers may find its way to GTA Online. We are hoping for some big changes in the coming months in terms of content and gameplay improvements.
