Why are retailers canceling the pre-orders of Starfield?

Don't worry, this isn't a precursor to a potential delay but more like a sign of a corporation letting its greed get the best of it.

Unfortunately, Starfield will be exclusive to the Xbox Series S/X.

Imagine staying up late to place a pre-order for Starfield as soon as they went up only to find out months later that all the hard work you’ve put in has been wasted. This is the dilemma faced by several consumers right now after placing their pre-orders for the Constellation Edition of Starfield through Walmart, which, by the way, costs a whopping $300.

Over the past several days, fans have taken to various internet forums to report cancelations of their pre-orders, triggering a wave of unease amongst those who had reserved the collector’s item in advance of the game’s September release.

Starfield followers first started sounding alarm bells on Twitter and Reddit, sharing screenshots of their order histories from Walmart. These showed the total charge for their Constellation Edition pre-order dropped to an unexpected $0.00. Many of the same users received notifications that the retailer had refunded their purchase, only to discover that, in fact, their orders had been entirely canceled.

I’m more than a little concerned about the order update I just got.

The sudden changes to the pre-orders have left the community stunned. Some are blaming the interactions with customer support as a potential reason. It’s not unusual to come across a report of a customer receiving assurance that their pre-order is still active only to get a phone call a short while later informing them of the abrupt cancellation.

The internet is now replete with similar experiences. The only common denominator is that they all placed their pre-orders at Walmart.

There are theories that this may be a result of Walmart having accepted more pre-orders than they could fulfill, a situation not unheard of in the gaming world. Despite the growing number of affected customers, the retail giant has yet to issue a statement clarifying the situation. This has left many fans checking their pre-order statuses anxiously, hoping to avoid disappointment come September 6.

For once, the controversies surrounding Starfield isn’t because of Bethesda or Microsoft.

However, amid the confusion and disappointment, some customers have received messages that could offer a glimmer of hope. Several customers were told by support representatives that the issue is likely a technical error and all orders remain active. Promises of an update within 48 hours have been made, but as we wait for official communication from Walmart, it’s unclear if this will be enough to calm the rising tide of worried Starfield enthusiasts.

Others have suggested the change might be due to a delayed removal of pre-order holds, which is an operation Walmart is known for conducting shortly after placing the initial charge. This aligns with a recent experience by a customer who claims that the charge was removed a month after placing the pre-order. If accurate, this could mean that the orders are still active and will be honored upon release.

Ultimately, the impact on Starfield fans eagerly awaiting their Constellation Edition remains to be seen. For now, they are left navigating a nebula of uncertainty. As we move closer to the launch date, Starfield’s future customers can only hope for clear communication and a swift resolution to the issue from Walmart.

You’d think that placing an order for the most expensive edition of any game would go smoothly.

After all, the final frontier of Starfield should involve venturing out into the universe and exploring thousands of worlds, not wrestling with pre-order complications.

In the meantime, we’d like to remind you of the envious position of Phil Spencer after he played Starfield over the weekend.
