After several rumors and leaks, and much speculation, Square Enix finally released the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the PS4 back in April 2020. Less than a year later, Sony added the game to the March lineup of its monthly subscription service, PlayStation Plus. Now, Square Enix has confirmed that those who got the game as a freebie can upgrade to the PS5 version without added charge.
Is the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake a huge upgrade?
Square Enix first revealed details about Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade back in May. Unfortunately, back then, the publisher had a different stance regarding the PS5 upgrade of the game. At the time, Square Enix confirmed that Intergrade will only be a free upgrade to those who bought their copies of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. This meant that gamers who received free copies of the game would miss out on the free upgrade to the PS5 version.
Thankfully, Square Enix has since changed its mind. PS5 owners with PS Plus versions of Final Fantasy 7 Remake can start downloading the upgrade this December 22.

This surprising change of stance by Square Enix is the perfect Christmas present for longtime PS Plus subscribers who will get their hands on a PS5 this holiday season. The PS5 version of the FF7 Remake is well worth celebrating. In addition to faster loading times and haptic feedback support for the DualSense, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade also comes with upgraded visuals and more graphics options such as support for native 4K or 60FPS game at the cost of a lower resolution.
Square Enix also confirmed that the PS5-exclusive DLC for the FF7 remake, Episode Intermission, is available at a 25% discount. The aforementioned DLC content stars Yuffie Kisaragi in a standalone adventure that occurs parallel to the evens of the main game.
In other Final Fantasy news, the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake has just been released, albeit to much criticism. Fans are currently up in arms about the abysmal state of the highly anticipated remake of the 1997 classic on the PC. Meanwhile, Square Enix just suspended sales of Final Fantasy XIV again after the game proved to be too successful for the servers to handle. Finally, Final Fantasy VII: First Soldier has been out for mobile devices for around a month now.
