Twisted Metal arrived on Peacock in July to widespread acclaim. The show’s quality surprised critics and fans alike and it climbed into Peacock’s top five most-watched shows in less than a month. Given its impressive debut, many people expected the streaming platform to renew it for another season.

On Thursday, December 7, their wish was granted. Anthony Mackie, Twisted Metal’s lead character, took to the stage at The Game Awards to announce that a second season is in the works. Alongside Mackie’s announcement, Peacock also released a short teaser trailer to announce the second season.

Twisted Metal is based on the video game franchise of the same name, although it tells an original story. Apart from climbing into Peacock’s ranking of most-watched shows, it became the platform’s most-binged comedy premiere, with the average subscriber watching three episodes in one sitting and many others watching all 10 episodes at once.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Twisted Metal follows Mackie’s John Doe – a motor-mouthed amnesiac milkman who is hired to transport a mysterious package across the wasteland. Along the way, he encounters many dangers, including religious fanatics, law enforcement, and a deranged clown.

In a press release addressing the renewal, Twisted Metal’s showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith appreciated the show’s fans for their love and support. He also expressed his delight at the show’s renewal and hinted at new foes in the upcoming season.

In his words, “We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew.”

Apart from its renewal, there is no other information on the show. While Smith’s statement confirms the return of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth, played by Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, and Joe Seanoa/Will Arnett, we have no idea who will be joining them on the cast.

Also, no information has been released on the plot details. However, Twisted Metal’s Season 1 ending might have provided a clue on the direction of the second season. At the end of that installment, John is forced to participate in a tournament, his sister is revealed to be searching for him, and the deranged clown Sweet Tooth, after surviving an attempt on his life, is out for blood against his attackers.

While the second season of Twisted Metal might pick up the story from where the first season left off, it may also go in a different direction. Unless more details come to life, there is no way to know for sure, especially since the show is an original take on the video game franchise.

However, we doubt much progress has been made on the second season, in terms of the script, casting, and others, given the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes only recently ended.

Twisted Metal was nominated for Best Adaptation at The Game Awards, alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Gran Turismo, Castlevania: Nocturne, and The Last of Us. Unfortunately, The Last of Us took the crown, which was hardly a surprise given the acclaim the show received following its release earlier in the year.
