When Grinding Gear Games first introduced Path of Exile 2 to the world at ExileCon 2019, it was presented as an expansive upgrade to the original Path of Exile, expected to sit as an annex to the beloved RPG. Four years later since then, the sequel has transformed into a behemoth in its own right.

Today, Path of Exile 2 stands as a full standalone sequel, brimming with innovative elements that could potentially kickstart a new era for action RPGs.

Path of Exile 2 has undergone a metamorphosis as it sees the addition of fresh gameplay mechanics, classes, skills, and a wealth of content that redefines what we can expect from action RPGs.

According to game director Jonathan Rogers, the shift in approach came to pass as Path of Exile 2 evolved beyond its initial conception. The realization hit that the sequel was not merely an expansion, but an entity of its own, filled to the brim with an entirely new campaign, classes, monsters, skills, and mechanics. "This thing is freaking huge," Rogers exclaimed, as he marveled at the magnitude of the game's evolution. As such, it was decided that it would not supersede the original game, but instead coexist as a separate entity.
